*This is a collaborative post on our garage renovation, but all opinions and words are my own
I’m pretty sure I’ve spoken about our garage renovation for the past few years, but nothing much has changed. But 2023 will be the year it’s completed!
For anyone who hasn’t followed the journey. Me and my fiance Luke bought got the keys to our house on day one of the first lockdown in March 2020. We spent the next few months gutting the house and renovating. But one thing that wasn’t complete when we officially moved in was the garage conversion. We’re very lucky to have a double garage, and the plan is to split the space into three working spaces.
In the back quarter that connects to the house will be a small utility room. Our washer, dryer and spare fridge already live in the garage, but they’ll have their own dedicated space with some good garage shelving installed to ensure we’ve got all the storage we could need. And then the other half on that side will remain the garage and mainly be for Luke’s tools etc. Then the full other half we’re turning into Luke’s own space where he can game and have all of his things around him.
So far we have about a quarter of the flooring made, and the large window on Luke’s side of the build. And that’s it. But I am adamant 2023 is the year.
For our garage renovation, here are some ways we’re saving money.
Labour is expensive, and rightfully so, as people need the right skills (and qualifications for some things). But thankfully, we’re going to be able to do about 90% of the work ourselves. Although when I say ourselves, I do mean Luke and his dad. I will be there when it comes to furnishing the space and organising cupboards.
We’re in a very privileged position where this is possible, meaning we’ll save thousands of pounds. We would have had to pay numerous people with different skills to do the work, from building the floors, ceilings, walls and utility cupboards to the electrics and carpet laying. But we’re only going to need to pay someone to do a very small amount of tiling on the utility floor. And even then, I’m convinced we can do it ourselves if we don’t need to cut tiles.
There’s a lot to buy during the renovation, from building materials to decorative items, and then things for Luke’s room, such as a TV and audio equipment.
So before we spend anything, I’ll check the deals and discount vouchers/ codes on Love Discount Vouchers. I hate paying full price, and the brand list loads of ways to save money, such as an ao discount code £30 off, which will come in handy for some tech pieces we’ll need.
Using websites like Love Discount Vouchers needs to become a ritual you do before spending. Then you know you’ve got the best price possible for what you’re buying.
We didn’t initially think about putting in a sink in the utility room, which would have been useful, but an additional cost to plumb and fit.
Our washing machine and tumble drier are already plumbed in the garage, and by removing the idea of a sink, we have no additional plumbing costs. When we were thinking of everything we wanted we thought about the costs of things vs what we really and truly wanted.

Plenty of ideas I got on how to save money on garage renovation. Informative read indeed.
It is amazing how much you can save by doing some if not all renovations yourself when renovating a space. Good luck with your garage renovation, it sounds like you have a good plan in place.
Plumbing is a pain and it does take time. It’s nice though to have renovations done even if you don’t get everything that you want done. 🙂
I love the idea of doing big projects myself but I am not that handie. I often end up hiring contractors to do these jobs for me.
I am not handy at all, so I’m very lucky to have my partner who is x
Ohh wow….this is so useful informative. Learnt lots more saving cost tops on garage reno from here. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Siennylovesdrawing
It sounds like you really do plan to utilise the space and I can’t wait to see what it looks like once it is finished x
Nor can I. I’ve been waiting long enough haha x
So many ideas and it’s crazy how many ways you can save . I really need to knuckle down next year as we are moving house so need all the savings we can get
Very timely article for me. My hubby n I are right in the middle of a renovation. We are saving money by doing what we can ourselves. The timeline is slow but we are slowly moving forward. Good luck with yours and thank you for the tips
I would love a utility space so I could get the white goods out of the kitchen. Our garage is already converted to a room but maybe one day.
Yeah I love the idea of having it’s own space, plus I can store so many of the cleaning products out there too x
You are so lucky that both the men are good at DIY so you can do the work your selves. It sounds like that project is well under way, Looking forward to the completed renovations in 2023.
Yes I am very lucky, it’s more about them finding the time x
