Is anyone else already weary of hearing the predictable ballads by Mariah Carey or Michael Bublé’s melodic rhapsodies about the magic of Christmas? You’re not alone. Wherever you go, a faint jingle is hidden around every corner. And if it isn’t in the shops, it’s managed to make its way into your home!

Luckily, there are plenty of wonderful seasonal tunes that don’t have a whiff of a jingle. And not a single ‘Merry Christmas’ thrown in. Here are some great 2022 albums that deserve a spot on your Christmas playlist.

Faith in the Future – Louis Tomlinson

Louis Tomlinson’s second solo album after the launch of his career in the band One Direction, Faith in the Future, is eclectic and energetic. It’s packed with songs that are both relatable and catchy, with showstoppers like Bigger Than Me, Out of My System and Silvertongues.

The album sold well in CD format and vinyl and is now closing in on second place on Billboard’s Top Album Sales.

Midnights – Taylor Swift

The pop queen’s tenth album is a feat of original brilliance and marks the dawn of Swift’s more subdued sound. The album is all about reflection rather than turbulence, pondering what it is to be a ‘good girl’ in a society built on female expectations and the fundamental sadness and frustration of life.

The album is made up of songs you’ll stick on repeat like Midnight Train, Karma and No Body, No Crime. Moody, considered and powerful, this is Taylor Swift like we’ve never heard her before. No wonder it’s reigning as number 1 above Mariah Carey this Christmas!

There’s Nothing but Space, Man! – Sam Ryder

Are you still buzzing from Eurovision fever? Sam Ryder’s debut album is a Christmas cracker full of variety. If you know the artist, you’ll know that he emerged on TikTok with his astonishing falsetto that immediately made him viral. The former wedding singer then shared the stage with other Eurovision competitors and blew the crowd away with the song Space Man, thus informing his debut album.

It’s full of dancefloor fillers, jaunty tunes and even melancholic numbers for balance. This makes for a well-rounded album that has something for everyone.

Last Night in the Bittersweet – Paolo Nutini

Most of us will associate Paolo Nutini with the quirky folk tunes that made him a household name. This time, the Scottish singer is taking things in a new direction with a darker sound that works remarkably well.

Emotional piano ballads are paired with heavy baselines and guitar solos for an album packed with sincere feelings and vulnerability. Nutini, like Swift, has a whole new sound.
