*This is a collaborative post on garage storage; all words and thoughts are my own
If you’ve been following me through our house renovations you’d know the garage is our next space to work on. The project should have been finished around 18 months ago, but 2023 will be the year.
Not only am I itching for a proper utility space and not just a washer drier in a dusty garage, but I want some proper garage storage and organisation going on. A lot of the time I walk in, see the mess and walk back out again.
We’re very lucky to have a double garage space which we will be turning into 50% Luke’s office, 25% utility, and 25% normal garage space. But at the moment, it’s just a big old mess. If I needed something and Luke wasn’t there, I would have no hope. And even when he is there, it’s not a guarantee.
As Luke is an electrician he has a lot of materials, and because he has a van, he’s regularly asked to clear out sites. This means all the materials are dumped in our garage as they don’t have a storage solution.
And as the garage is mainly Luke’s domain and he’s not an organised person, it’s in a bit of a state. Before we can even move on with the next stage of the renovation project, we need to organise what we have.
Once this is done, we can sort out the garage flooring. Then we can move on to building the rooms, adding ceilings, doors etc. And then the fun part of properly organising the space.
It’s easy to just pile things up in a garage and never fully sort it. It’s a space in the home people don’t tend to see. But having a properly organised space can not only help you find things easier, but actually save you space.
When we do our renovation, we’re going to have a space 75% smaller than what we have now for general garage pieces. And shelving units are going to be how we manage it. Getting some units that are the right height of your space will allow you to maximise storage going up.
You can put items you need less often at the top. For some people this may be Christmas decorations or summer items. For us it will be the materials Luke is less likely to need for work. We have a few shelving units at the moment, but we need to reconfigure them to add some height and make the most of the ceiling space.
It doesn’t matter how much space you have, if it isn’t organised you won’t be optimising what you have.
We have lots of plastic boxes on our shelves, but they’re totally hidden at the moment. Once we have sorted out the space, so there’s nothing in front of them, we need to organise.
Having a logical system and keeping similar items together will make things much easier to find. This might be having all painting supplies, such as brushes, rollers, trays etc., together. And then in another one having all car related bits together such as oil, deicer and cleaning supplies.
Once all of the items are organised in a way that works for you, it’s time to get labelling. You may have clear boxes to see what’s inside, but labelling them for easy access will make your life a lot easier.

Thank goodness our garage is kept organized. We’ve declutted last year, a ton of stuff that we never used got removed and got rid of.
Every time we do that we get rid of loads but it doesn’t seem to make a dent x
This is my husbands domain, we access our garage through our kitchen so have the washing machine and chest freezer in there. But the rest is a mess that does need sorting
Ours is the same with access and our washer drier so I can not wait until we build that corner into an actual utility x
My garage storage situation is SOOOO Bad! This blog was written for me!!! I need to seriously organize it better. We kind of use it as a storage area, but cannot find anything anymore because there is so much in there. Your blog motivated me a little to maybe start organizing it bit by bit.
I know exactly how you feel haha x
Great ways to make your garage more organized and better to use. Thank you.
Organizing garage in an efficient way helps in sparing space. Labeling boxes can make identification easier.
I’m so excited to get to that level of organisation x
Love this idea! We recently re-organized our garage and removed what we didn’t need + put things away better and it made such a huge difference.
It has taken a good three spring cleanings to get our garage organized haha but there’s still so much left to go through! It’s mostly decorations now though. I’m hoping this spring it’ll finally be cleared out and organized.
We converted our garage to an extra bedroom but I would love to have converted it to a utility room.
I am forever fighting against clutter…As much as I hate it, it creeps on me unexpectedly….
This is one project my family and I need to do for spring cleaning. Our garage has so much junk in it! It has not been organized since the start of the pandemic. Thank you for the timely reminder.
A garage can be very much out of sight, out of mind x
Oh man this is something that we are in the midst of doing right now. The winter has been cold and I don’t want to go out there but we are starting as I am getting ready fro spring and I will feel so good once we get the garage done!
I hope Spring time is when we get ours sorted too x
We’re looking to move and hoping to have a garage at our new property . space saving is on our top list for when we move
