*This is a collaborative post on bedroom decor ideas that won’t break the bank
It already feels like we’re gearing up for Autumn and the cosy months of the year. It’s getting a bit colder and I’ve seen some people talking about putting the heating on already. While I’m not looking forward to trying to heat the house, I am on board with everything else about this time of the year.
It’s the perfect time of the year to update your bedroom and get it looking all cosy ahead of the cooler months.
Nothing updates a room quite like some new bedding, and investing in some good quality cosy bedding is a must. We spend a lot of time in our beds, and the quality of your mattress, pillows and bedding will really impact how well you sleep. We are a couple who sleep with separate duvets as it works for us, but it does mean double the bedding. So we have a lot we have to store away. We have ottoman beds in our bedrooms and store all of our spare bedding (and a whole load more) in them. So it’s super easy to get the spares out when making the bed.
It’s almost the time of the year of layers and blankets to keep everything warm and toasty while you sleep. Just changing up the colours in your layering with a few pillows or a blanket can make a massive difference. Going for darker or deeper colours will instantly make your space feel cosier.
Lighting can make or break a space, and for a bedroom to feel cosy and inviting lamps or additional lighting can make a huge impact. Yes, the main light is essential but if you’re watching a movie, reading a book in bed, or just generally chilling out you want something softer and less harsh.
Wall-mounted lights above your bedroom are the best space savers and if you get smart bulbs you can even control them with an Alexa (or similar). We have our lights set up like this and use the command ‘Sleepytime’ to turn them off when we’re done. It means if you’re super cosy in bed you don’t have to get up or even move to turn off the lights.
For us, we had to rush into making the paint choices for our house, and thankfully I don’t regret any of our choices. But as it’s been three years I’m starting to think about some updates. But our bedroom is one space that I still really love, and it’s quite a bold choice. We have purple walls with purple and gold print wallpaper behind our bed.
Colour can make a massive difference to any room. If you’re not ready to go all out you can opt for an accent wall behind your bed to anchor the space. There’s no right or wrong colour for your bedroom, as long as you feel relaxed and comfortable in it. If we didn’t have purple I love the idea of a calming sage green and then tying in some rust orange accessories alongside it.
You can pick up a tin of paint pretty cheaply (especially if you’re only doing one wall). But it will have such an impact in your space. Alternatively, hang a poster/ some artwork/ a gallery wall within your space to create a focal point.
Getting nice furniture can be pretty expensive, but it can be easy enough to upcycle what you already have. Consider sanding and painting or staining an item to give it some new life. I bought a tall set of Alex drawers quite a few years ago and decided to paint dark grey stripes on it for something unique.
Even just adding new handles onto drawers or doors can make an impact.
Bedrooms can easily feel messy with too much going on, so be smart with storage choices. As I mentioned at the start ottoman beds can provide so much additional storage and allow you to store away items you don’t need day-to-day including spare bedding and towels, out-of-season clothing, suitcases etc.
Try and get storage options that are closed as opposed to open so you can shut things away and have less on show. We have some shelves built into a cove in our bedroom and I’d love to get doors built onto them one day so less is instantly visible.
Getting new bedding is always the first thing I look for, especially if we do not need to redecorate. Curtains are another thing we look at changing
Your storage idea is amazing and so functional. I would love to add more storage space to our bedroom, the place looks a bit cluttered.

I am a big fan of upcycling furniture. I have also just gone for some new bedding in Autumn colour, burnt orange and sage green!
That’s my favourite Autumn colouring combination x
Upcycling furniture is my favorite on your list! It can be pretty expensive to buy new furniture so working on with what we already have is a good idea.
Your bedroom decor sounds fantastic! It’s amazing how a little paint can transform a space. I totally agree about upcycling furniture too ā a fresh coat of paint or new handles can work wonders. Can’t wait to see your updates! ļø #HomeMakeover
Great tips here! I think these are great little ways that can completely transform a space. Love the idea of the secret storage too…I think getting creative like that and keeping the space clear can really open it up.
Any way to hide stuff away is a dream in a bedroom (at least for me) x
Autumn is my favourite season and I noticed that the shops are full of autumnal decor this week!
It makes me so happy as I love Autumn x
