Tips For Effective Money Management Through Banking

March 19, 2024

Managing your money effectively is a crucial skill for achieving financial stability. A key aspect of managing money is how you handle your banking. Because let’s face it most of us don’t use cash any more, so banking money management is so important.

Whether you’re just starting your financial journey or just looking to optimise your current approach, here are some tips for effective money management through banking.

Choose the right bank for your needs

The first step in acing your money management through banking is by choosing the right bank for you. There are loads of different banks available and it depends on what’s important for you and your habits.

Do you need a bank with physical locations to pay in cash? Do you want one with the option to separate money into pots? Or do you just need one with a really user friendly app?

Personally I think it’s a good idea to have more than one current account. And for me that means having both a traditional and digital bank account as each has it’s own perks.

Ace your money management with automations

Managing your money can take time, but automations can help you stay on track without needing any of your time.

Set up automatic transfers to savings pots each payday so you’re always putting aside the money needed for savings goals. You can automate payments for bills and debt as well to ensure you don’t miss out.

As Luke get’s paid weekly we have a lot of weekly automations when that money comes in to put it all in the right places. And it means each week I don’t have to do anything manually.

Monitor your accounts

You probably don’t need to be checking your account every single day, but make it a regular thing to keep tabs. Keep an eye on spending and your balance.

With some banks you can set up alerts to see whenever you spend and keep a track on your habits.

Staying on top of your bank account will help you catch any issues early and maintain control over your finances.

Help your money management by taking advantage of banking tools

Most banks will offer tools to help you manage your money effectively. Some might include things like debt repayment trackers, or budgeting tools. Others like Monzo will help you put a specific limit on different types of spending to stop you overspending.

Browse your banks app and website to learn more about the tools and resources available. And make the most of what’s on offer.

Take advantage of high-interest savings

If you’re putting money aside you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the most interest possible. So explore different ISA’s, savings pots, bonds and everything your bank has to offer. Compare interest rates to see what works best for you.

You might find the best day-to-day bank for you doesn’t offer the best savings rates, so don’t be afraid to open a savings account/ ISA with another provider. You don’t need to keep everything with one bank.

Effective banking and money management skills are essential for achieving your financial goals. By choosing the right bank and services you can make your money work better. If you haven’t already start implementing these tips today to build a solid foundation.

Monitoring accounts is very important. I do try to do this regularly after seeing payments coming out of my account for phone payments that I hadn’t authorised a few years back. It’s best to identify issues as soon as possible. It also helps you keep on top of what you’ve spent and have available to spend.
