Chalkboard with the word spend crossed out and the word save

A no-spend challenge can be a great way to save money, take control of your finances and help you rethink your spending habits.

The concept is pretty simple: for a set period of time you commit to only spending on necessities. The main goal is to avoid unnecessary spending, and curb spending. You’re in control of what you see as a necessity, but more on that later on.

Staying on track during a no-spend challenge can be tricky, but here are some ideas to help you stick with it.

Step one for no-spend challenge: Define your goal

Why are you taking part in a no-spend challenge? Is it because you think you spend too much on stuff you don’t need? Is it because you’re saving money for a specific goal?

Knowing why you’re doing it can help you stay motivated throughout the process. It might be a good idea to write your goal down and place it somewhere visible.

Step two- Define what necessities are to you

Establishing boundaries are essential for a successful no-spend challenge. Typically, necessities include your rent/ mortgage, utility bills and groceries. But the rules are up to you.

For me I’d have cat food/ litter on my necessity list as we can’t live without it. I’d also have

Having this list will help you work out the areas you’re not spending in so it’s clear with no grey areas.

Step three for a no-spend challenge: Set a timeframe

The challenge can last as long as you like, from a weekend to a full year. If you’ve never done a no-spend challenge before, start with a shorter period, like a week or two so you can ease into the habit.

Having a set timeframe in mind will help give you the motivation to carry on as you’ll know the end is in sight.

If you have a specific goal in mind or want to build larger savings then you might want to choose a longer period for the challenge. But build up to if you’re starting out.

Step four: Get yourself prepared

Preparation is key to avoiding temptations so make a plan before you embark on your journey.

Things you can do:

Step five for a no-spend challenge: Track your progress

Keeping track of your spending (and subsequent savings) will help you stay accountable and motivated. Use whatever method works for you from a physical notebook to a spreadsheet or budgeting app.

Make sure you note down victories like skipping a meal out, or finding a free activity to do.

Step six: Communicate your plan

Let your friends and family know you’re taking part in a no-spend challenge. This way you won’t feel like you’re saying no all the time, and hopefully you’ll inspire some others to do it with you.

Join online communities and chat to other people also taking part in the challenge.

Are you ready for a no-spend challenge?

A no-spend challenge is more than just a way to save money- it’s a chance to reset some of your habits. By having clear goals and rules, and staying accountable you can take control of your finances.

Remember, even small spends can bring you closer to your goals.

My husband and I learned the hard way about not to spend. When the 2008 housing collapse happened and we lost basically everything, for 5 years, we didn’t spend on anything except the necessities. We paid off all the bills and life has been so much sweeter since then. You live and really learn when there isn’t money coming into the home.
