When we think about travel, our minds usually jump to holidays abroad. But a staycation can be one of the most rewarding ways to take a break. No jet lag, language barriers or high flight prices, just fun.
Here’s why I think staycations are one of the most underrated travel trends right now.
Flights, transfers, and exchange rates can make holidays abroad feel out of reach. Staycations cut out those costs instantly. Whether it’s a cosy countryside cottage or a chic city apartment, there are plenty of affordable options right on our doorstep. That means more budget left over for treating yourself to a nice meal out, a spa day, or even extending your trip.
Although it is worth noting that not all staycations will be cheaper than going abroad, you just need to explore your options.
No 3am alarms to catch a flight, no baggage drop drama, and no worrying about lost luggage.
With a staycation, the journey can actually be enjoyable. Whether it’s a scenic train ride or a road trip with your favourite playlist, getting there is part of the adventure — not the most exhausting bit.
Having a baby means the idea of packing everything for a flight is stressful just to think of. But jumping in a car and bringing half our home feels more practical.
From rugged coastlines and rolling hills to buzzing cities and quaint villages, the UK is full of hidden gems. Places like the Lake District, Cornwall, or the Scottish Highlands are just as breathtaking as destinations abroad.
Sometimes we’re so focused on faraway locations that we forget how much beauty is right on our doorstep.
Staycations don’t always need weeks of planning. Fancy a spontaneous weekend break? Book a night away, pack a bag, and go. It’s easier to fit around busy schedules, and shorter trips still give you that ‘holiday’ reset without needing lots of time off work.
Flexibility also means if there’s an issue you can usually make it home much quicker (and cheaper) than if you were abroad.
One of my favourite things about staycations is how they make you appreciate your own country more. Exploring a new part of the UK often makes me realise how much variety and history we have right here — and it often sparks new ideas for future trips.
Staycations might not sound as glamorous as a long-haul trip, but they come with their own kind of magic. Whether it’s a seaside escape, a countryside retreat, or a city weekend, there’s something special about holidaying closer to where you live.
You cannot beat a staycation! I think a lot of people underestimate how much the UK has to offer x

Staycations are so underrated. Honestly, a lot of us are living right around the corner from hidden gems that people travel miles to visit.

I’m a HUGE fan of staycations. If you just Google for five minutes, you’ll almost certainly find there are places you’ve never taken advantage of in your area.
We have a campervan so quite regularly pop off for little staycations around the UK. You’re right! I think it’s so underrated here! I really love Northumberland for a staycation. There are so many benefits to a UK staycation.

That’s such a good way of doing it having a campervan! x
The UK is seriously beautiful and I can’t agree more, I love it…Staycations in the UK make so much sense especially that there is a lot to see and a variety of things to do.
Staycations are definitely kinder to your wallet. They can be very refreshing too.
Taking a staycation is a wonderful idea to relax as a family. Thanks a lot for these tips.
We are looking to pick a bunch of cities in the next year and go and visit them all like a tourist! We did this recently, and it was so much fun – plus – far less travel time (and planes do take a lot from our planet).
I really want to do that next year so we can show our little one new places x
Skipping the travel stress is my favorite part of it! I haate everything that has to do with organizing for the trip.
We love a staycation , always looking to explore and get out more but on the smallest budget ever 🙂
