*This is a collabrative post on ways to save money on exercise, but all words and thoughts are my own
Exercise is one of those healthy habits which can end up costing a fortune. Some gym memberships are crazy expensive, but your fitness is important. And while they may work for some people, others may not be able to afford £100+ a month on them. But exercise doesn’t have to be expensive, here are some ways you can save money on exercise.
Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning in locations all around the world and it’s totally free. The event is a 5km run which is open to everyone no matter whether you’re a seasoned runner, or if you end up jogging/ walking most of it. There’s no time limit and no winning/ losing mentality. When you register you get a bar code and this code is scanned so you can get your run times.
I want to start doing my couch to 5km when the weather gets a bit nicer. Then once I am a bit more confident running I want to start Parkrun. For me, it will be a great encouragement to get outside in the fresh air as much as anything. Plus it’s an easy way to save money on exercise as you’re just running. There are currently over 166,000 events so there’s bound to be one near you.
If you have a Sweaty Betty store local to you it’s worth checking if they host classes. A lot of stores offer free weekly classes which can be booked online. There’s so much on offer as they have over 70 free workout classes in stores around the UK. This includes their brand new studio in Carnaby in London. The classes include dance, HIIT, Barre, Yoga and Pilates.
They also have free online workout videos if you don’t want to head outside for your workout. Sadly I don’t live all that close to a Sweaty Betty but I’d love to give one a go if I’m away and close by one.
All you need to do is search Eventbrite to find free fitness classes in your local area. Loads of business or individuals will run them. Sometimes it will be a free taster session so you can see what the class is like. Then you can choose to carry on paying weekly or just do one free class. Some are outdoor weekly free classes like circuits or HIIT. As they’re outside there are no gym or location fees so places can afford to offer them for free so you can save money on exercise.
Searching in my local area I’ve found quite a few happening over the next week.
If you love to ride your bike and cycling is your thing then join Let’s Ride. There’s no membership or sign up fee and you can just join bike rides alongside others who love cycling. It’s not only great exercise but a good way to meet new people. Especially if you’ve just moved or want to make more friends in your local area.
You can use the ride finder to find your local one and there are over 2,000 rides which happen each and every week. If riding is your thing then this is a great social way to save money on exercise and get out on the open road.
This one is just limited to those who live in London but I thought it was a great unusual exercise option and that’s skating. Every Friday night at 8 pm weekly marshalled street skates happen departing from Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner. There are also Sunday Strolls which go from Serpentine Road in Hyde Park at 2 pm. As long as you can stop, turn and control your speed on hills then you’re welcome to join the Friday night skate.
As the name suggests the Sunday Stroll is a more relaxed slower paced skate. I think this is such a great idea to save money on exercise and it’s pretty different from your traditional exercise methods.
As you can see there are quite a few events you can join to save money on exercise. But it’s just about looking around in your local area. For example, in a few locations, Lululemon offers free yoga classes and a run club. In London, you can join free women’s only classes with Adidas. It’s just about searching around.

Oo I didn’t know that Sweaty Betty did free exercise classes – I’ll certainly be checking these out, thank you 🙂
Some great tips here I did not know about free classes from Sweaty Betty that is good to know
Yes gym memberships can be ridiculously expensive (especially so if a person is one of the people that pays and never goes, something I have experience with). These re all great suggestions.
I’ve not heard of the Fiday night skate before, that sounds like fun. Parkrun is supposed to be realy good. I have a few friends that do that and love it.
These are great ideas. I don’t regularly exercise but hope to change that – we’ve now got a games room/gym in our new house so want to take full advantage of it!
Ohh that’s amazing, I’d love to have space for a gym or at least a few pieces of equipment as sometimes it’s nicer to be able to exercise at home x
I didn’t know you could get exercise classes on event bright, I will bear that in mind once we get out of lockdown. I have never heard of sweaty betty before though.
Great tips, I have used Event bright for events for the kids before but never thought about it for exercise/fitness! I can’t really afford to join the gym right now (we are saving to buy our first home) so these tips will definitely come in handy to keep me active!
Great tips here, i love a bit of youtube for free fitness classes. My hubby and daughter completed a park run last year and loved it!
We have found some fun, free online classes to do which the kids love. I am quite enjoying Joe Wicks too
Great tips! What with the current climate I can’t afford to be spending on anything deemed unnecessary so free workouts sound amazing right now!

Some great ideas here. I know I used to spend a fortune on going to the gym for the year. In the end I just cancelled it
