Essentials You Need For Your Summer Holidays

holiday toiletry bag

This year is flying by and it’s actually pretty scary, but one of the great things about it being nearer summer means that the main holiday season will be starting soon. I don’t have a traditional summer holiday booked yet but I am going to Romania for five days in August which I know will be super warm so I might not needing swimming costumes and pool floats but I will need a lot of other summer specific items.

The top thing I always get out when I am packing is a travel wash bag and this Zippo* one is great as it’s really good quality thick leather and it’s unisex so my boyfriend doesn’t mind having it in the suitcase with all of his toiletries in it. Up until the end of last year I didn’t know Zippo did leather goods, I thought it was just lighters but their leather goods are really great as the leather is both soft and supple so it doesn’t lose it’s shape but it’s also firm and high quality.

Next up are the toiletries to put in the bag. For me, hair care is always important as I have coloured hair so keeping it looking vibrant and in good condition is even more imperative in the summer sun. There really aren’t enough brands who do travel sized colour specific hair care so the label.m Colour Stay Shampoo and Conditioner* have been great additions to my bag as they seal and shield your hair whilst still protecting it from both UV rays and heat styling.

For those times my hair isn’t freshly coloured I like to go for products that promote volume as I find that my hair lacks that little something extra so the Healthy Hair Set* is perfect for travelling as it contains everything that you may need. There’s a Thickening Hair Treatment Shampoo and conditioner alongside a Root Boost Thickening Spray all of which are way under the 100 ml liquid allowance for hand luggage so they’re great if you’re not checking in baggage, but the Thickening Spray is great to keep in your handbag just for that top-up spray during the day.

I’m always very careful with the type of hair care that I use but if you’re struggling with hair loss then you might want to consider treatment such as  Advanced Tricho Pigmentation Treatment.

Whenever I go away I always need to take a good hairbrush away and you can’t beat a Tangle Teezer* which is the original detangling hairbrush. The brush is great for travelling as it works on both dry and wet hair ensuring that there’s no pulling or tugging which is perfect for me as I find when I first wake up and after I have washed my hair it gets quite tangled and this helps brush it in the best way possible.

When I dry my hair on holiday I find that my hair feels more damaged than if I dry it at home because of the added heat so I always try and take some of the Paul Mitchell Heat Seal* with me. Not only does it protect your hair from the heat but it provides light hold so is the perfect summer alternative to a hair spray which is perfect during humid conditions.

holiday multi purpose balm

Multifunctional products are perfect for holiday time as you can save space in your suitcase and serve a lot of purposes. This multi-purpose hair and body balm* from Space NK moisturises, protects, nurtures and soothes all the areas. As the balm is non-sticky and contains 99% natural oils and butter you can use it on your lips if they’re feeling dry and chapped, on your hands if they need some hydration, on your hair to help with styling and soothing, on sunburnt skin to soothe it or on your skin after shaving to calm your skin.

holiday toothpaste and perfume

I always know when I go away with hand luggage only I look out for as many non-liquid based products as I can and this activated white charcoal teeth whitening powder* is perfect for the summertime. It removes stains and discolouration from the surface of your teeth which is great when you’re likely to be drinking more cocktails, fruit juices and ice lollies during the warmer months which could stain your teeth. All you have to do is rub the powder on your teeth and let it do its magic. I’ve always had duller teeth so anything which can help brighten up my teeth is a massive plus for me, especially in the summer when I want to be posing for more photos in the sunshine.

During the summer you’ll want a light sweet-smelling fragrance so how about Tribe* which is full of summery fruit scents mixed with creamy vanilla undertone which makes it so fresh for the summertime. I am a huge fan of fruity scents and tend to prefer them to floral scents so this is perfect for me as it’s really light and gets me in the mood to sit in the sunshine with a cocktail.

holiday sun tan lotion

One of the most important things for the summertime is good SPF protection, especially if like me you can burn quite badly at the beginning of tanning. Bioderma have just launched their Photoderm Max Tinted Aquafluid* which has SPF 50+ in it so it’s perfect for your face to make sure you’re fully protected and not going to end up with a red nose like I get. As it’s very lightly tinted it’s perfect to wear on your face with nothing else as it gives a lovely glow without the need for any makeup. The liquid itself dries really quickly, it isn’t tacky or sticky and it’s really lightweight so you won’t remember that you’re wearing it at all.

If your skin isn’t quite as sensitive to the sunshine then you might prefer the Eucerin Sun Fluid Mattifying sunscreen* which is SPF30 so still a great strength but better for normal and combination skin. The great thing about this sunscreen is that it’s water-resistant so you don’t have to worry as much when you’re splashing around the pool or on the beach. Much like the Bioderma sunscreen it’s light, non-greasy and gives the skin a nice matte finish.

holiday first aid

Now none of us wants to think about getting ill when we’re on holiday but I’d much rather be prepared with everything I might need than not have anything and need it.

If you get a bit ill and lose some liquids or just don’t hydrate yourself enough in the heat you can replace lost fluids with Dioralyte* which works quicker than plain water and fruit juices. Summers and cold’s don’t go together but you’d be surprised how easy it is to catch a cold in the sunshine when more people are outside enjoying the weather or you’re in a confined space like an aeroplane. Coldzyme Onecold Mouth Spray* is here to help prevent those pesky colds. You can also stop germs in their tracks with Immunpro Infection Blocker* which works by creating a physical barrier in your mouth and throat to fight against germs because close contact with other’s on planes is pretty unavoidable.

If you suffer from motion sickness when on the aeroplane then give The Ginger Peoples GinsGins Hard Ginger Candy* a go as the ginger helps to boost digestive fluids and neutralise acids which mean that it’s great anti-nausea medicine, because who wants to feel sick when you’re going on holiday?!

If like me you attract the bugs galore then you’ll need some Anthisan Bite and Sting Cream* to soothe any insect bites or stings and making sure that your body copes well with any infection and doesn’t just swell up and cause discomfort. Humidity can be an issue when you’re away causing skin to become dry and potentially itchy so Suubalm* can help provide quick itch relief.

I always take anti-bac spray when I go away  but this convenient set of Travel Micro Sprays* are great as not only is there hand sanitiser but there’s also mosquito repellent and suntan cream in tiny

holiday wallet and towel

We all know how important it is to keep your passports and travel documents safe and a RFID Travel Wallet* is the best way to keep everything safe as it has RFID protection which basically means that the data on your cards and passport can’t be skimmed through the wallet. You know how you scan a contactless card through your wallet which is actually quite dangerous, well this has protection to meet you can’t do that. And there’s plenty of slots for paperwork, boarding passes and anything else you might need.

I always take a Compact Beach Towel* with me if I’m going away as they’re so quick drying and take up so little space in your bag. The extra large beach towel I have is perfect for a trip away but can squeeze into such a small bag and despite being so thin it’s really absorbent, especially good if you’re staying in a hostel when towels might not always be provided.

I am awful when it comes to packing, I always forget something. So having lists of essentials is something I need, I’m going to have to save this for when packing day comes around and perhaps treat myself to some of your ideas as well.

Great news that you have found sun protection that isn’t sticky – the downside of summer usually! We couldn’t live in our family without our supply of Tangle Teezers!
