De-cluttering And Downsizing My Flat Contents

One of my biggest goals for the next few month’s involves de-cluttering and clearing out absolutely all areas of my flat and my life really. The reasoning for clearing out everything is twofold really, both from a space point of view but also from a money point of view.

Saving has started for plan house buying 2019/20 so the budgeting has started *eek* which means money is becoming a bigger part of my world so the hope will be that by clearing out the flat I can find items which I can sell on to make some money. And from a space point of view we know that we’re going to be boxing and packing up an entire two bedroom flat at some point next year so the less stuff we have the better really.

I love doing clear outs and generally feel really cleansed afterwards so me and Luke have pencilled in a whole weekend into our diaries to tackle the main areas of our flat. On one day we’ll sort our bedroom and ensuite out from the clothes, ornaments and accessories and my beauty/ skincare collection. Then the other day we’ll tackle the spare bedroom/ man cave and the main bathroom, both of which are pretty daunting tasks.

Other than skincare and beauty items which almost certainly can be shaved down, the main area where I feel a downsize and clutter is needed is within my jewellery collection. I worked in a jewellers for around 7 and a half years from sixth form to my mid twenties so I amassed a large collection of both jewellery and watches and I know how much some of the products are worth. With the offer of discount I did buy way more items than a single person could ever dream of using or wearing so I know that I need to be both practical and brutal.

Items that I know I keep will either be those which I genuinely wear a lot and thus items that I get use out of, but also the items with real sentimental value. For me two of those items will include the very first diamond ring that I ever owned which is a beautiful white gold crossover band with black diamonds on one band and white on the other, every time I see that ring it reminds me of how hard I worked to be able to afford it. Another of the items to keep is a white gold diamond and ruby necklace which my parent’s bought me for my 21st birthday to match the ring which I’d been bought the year before. Both of those items bring memories of those times within my life.

Sentimental items to keep would also include antique items such as those which have been passed down through my family including a set of pearls that my dad gave to my mum when they first started dating. If I was to repurchase any items in the future I’d definitely look at Vintage rings for sale or other antique items as I love the idea of jewellery having a story or a history behind it rather than being cheaper in-the-moment pieces.

What antique or sentimental items would you make sure survived a de-clutter?

I think I like to keep most things. I like decluttering but I find it hard to throw things away. It sounds like your jewellery collection is a must keep though!

Decluttering is a great periodical challenge for people who love home and home life. Even more so when it comes to tiny apartments (but believe me… also with a big house, the more space we have the more we fill it).

This is also my personal goal. Been trying to declutter and let go of unnecessary stuff at home but I just realized that it is not easy. I can’t seem to decide which ones to keep and let go.

I need more determine to be able to finish this.

I really like the way you structured this post! I thought it was going to be all about downsizing but I was pleasantly surprised by the twist! I never really thought about what would have to survive a declutter. I have always had a really hard time decluttering because I want to SAVE EVERYTHING but I think when it came down to it there would be a few sentimental pieces as well.

Oh I’m right there with you. It’s almost the end of the summer and I’ve definitely began to declutter my house and rooms with things I’ve been hoarding.

My massive amounts of photos would have to be saved! I’m a photographer so, naturally I have too many photos! But they all have so much sentimental value to me!

I need to de-clutter and downsize too, long overdue. Hopefully soon we might relocate that will force me to do the same.

Decluttering can be so hard! I too can accumulate a lot of jewelry. Moving overseas has changed that as I move more often. You have to get used to just getting rid of some stuff!
