First Impressions On New Makeup

Debenhams Haul - Benefit Foundation

I absolutely love getting new makeup as the initial thrill of injecting it into your routine and seeing how it works both on its own and in your routine is a lot of fun. I can be quite fickle with makeup and it takes a lot for an item to be an absolute cult product, you know the kind that you’d instantly replace as soon as it’s run out or the kind that you always have a back up of. Over the past month or so I’ve got quite a few new items of makeup so I thought I’d do a first impressions post to see what my initial thoughts of them are.

I picked up the Benefit Hello Happy Foundation when the new Debenhams opened up in Watford as I don’t have a lot of light-medium coverage foundations and I’m trying to give my skin a break from constant full coverage foundation. I’ve used this pretty much constantly for a few weeks and I love how it feels on my skin as it’s not drying at all, something I was a little worried about, although I do have to use a good primer before. It is a really good coverage and it evens out the redness on my cheeks and there’s a little bit of buildability to it.

Emani Foundation

Next up are some products from a vegan brand called Emani who only use all-natural ingredients in a cruelty-free way.  The first item is the Perfect 10 Primer Serum which is a really hydrating primer and something I really appreciate for my drier than average skin. Much like the Too Faced Hangover Primer, it has a really creamy texture and sinks quickly into the skin to be used under makeup. It’s the kind of primer that could double up as a moisturiser so it would be great as a multi-product on holiday.

The next item I have is the Flawless Matte Foundation in shade 289 Linen. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t realise it was a compact cream foundation as opposed to a liquid but it’s quite nice to have something different that isn’t in my collection. This is a little drying on my skin as I need a lot of liquid but I find it works really well as a spot foundation that I’ve been using over BB/ CC Creams and light foundations. The shade is a perfect match for my skin and there’s a lot of choice in shades, this is the kind of thing that I think would work in my handbag to be used for touch ups.

Emani Baked Blusher
Next up is the Mosaic Blush in shade Saint Tropez which is a slightly bronze coral shade with gold shimmer throughout. The shade is really pretty and with the gold, it gives it a slight highlight and shimmer without having to use a separate product. I have found that I need to push the brush in a bit heavier to get some real pigment but when you brush it on the skin it does leave a real pretty colour.

The final Emani product I’ve been testing is the Prismatic Lipstick in Celestial which is a lipstick that has two different colours on each side of the bullet. I’m going to be honest due to the shade I picked being quite nude I didn’t notice the shade difference straight away, although in some of the darker shades it is more obvious. The great thing about this is how hydrating it is as it’s full of essential oils,  and fruit extract and it left my lips feeling really nice. My only issue with the lipstick is its physical shape being quite rounded due to the prismatic shape but once I’ve used it more I know the shape will flatten.

Debenhams Haul - Benefit Bad Girl Bang Mascara Mini

Another item I picked up in Debenhams was a mini of the Benefit Bad Girl Bang Mascara because I’d heard quite a few great things about it and it lived up to expectations and surpassed them. I’ve used previous Benefit mascara’s before but this is definitely the best I’ve used. The wand itself has some flexibility so it makes it a bit easier to manoeuvre into the corners of the lashes and the actual formula makes my lashes look really full without being clumpy. The hold of it is really good and it lasts most of the day.

Another eye product I’ve been using is the Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara and it’s honestly changed my life. This mascara is specifically for the bottom lashes so has a tiny wand designed for precise application and it’s stopped me having clumpy mascara blobs on my bottom lashes. Due to the wand size, I can hit each lash properly and I don’t think I could go back to using standard mascara.

Huda Emerald Palette

The final item I’ve been playing with is one of the new Huda Beauty Obsession Palette’s in Emerald which is full of nine stunning green colours. I went into Selfridges to look at the shades and I was convinced I’d be getting the Topaz brown palette but I thought I’d try something totally different and the Emerald palette is stunning with six shimmer and glitter shades and just three mattes. I’ve absolutely loved my previous Huda palette’s but I have to admit I have mixed feelings about this one.

The shades themselves are stunning but some of them lack initial pigment and you need to build them up quite a lot. This seems to be the case for the lighter shimmer shades, although I do appreciate the minimal fall out from the glitter shades which is a major issue I have with my Brown Obsessions palette. Overall it is a very pretty palette with some very useable shades but I just don’t think the quality quite matches other palette’s I’ve had from the brand.

I love those greens in the eyeshadow. Thank you for your honest review as I do not want to spend too much time perfecting and building up the color.

I have bookmarked this post for my wife to read. I know she will find it fascinating! She normally uses a company called artistry, but there is always room for trying out others…

I always get nervous trying a different brand of make up… I just don’t want it to clog my pores and feel heavy and caky… it’s something I usually read up on and look through many reviews before taking the leap of faith…lol
    love that you enjoy it!

I’m very very interested in the Emani primer both for the ethical choices of the brand and for being suitable for very dry skins. Do you think they sell and sell products overseas? I live in Italy.

I’m not much of a makeup wearer. In fact, I RARELY put on makeup. If I do, it’ll be on occasions like weddings, and usually I just put on mascara, light blush and a lipstick. Haha! but thing is, I tend to fall in love with some cosmetics stuff I end up buying them and use them once or twice, then I end up ignoring them and eventually forget that I have them.
Anyway, love the Obsession palette. I’d buy that if I walked by a store and saw it.
