I have made the first step in selling my flat and I am equal parts excited as it sparks a new chapter in my life, but I’m also nervous as I’ve been in that flat for 7 years and it was my first place on my own so it’s a big step for me. I had the valuation done earlier this week so I am waiting on that then it’s just some paperwork, descriptions, and images and it will be on the market, eek.
As I’ve made the first step in the process I’ve been starting to think and make a list of all the things I need to do before moving house which I know is going to get expensive. I want to document my process of moving and everything to do with it so here are the things I need to sort out before moving.
I have mixed feelings about the actual packing and moving process. We’re quite lucky in that we’re going to be moving into my parent’s house so our everyday stuff will be coming with us and we will be hoping to store all of our tech and higher value items which we won’t use on a daily basis in either my nans or my parent’s house. The rest of the stuff will be going into a storage unit so for all of these bits we will need to hire a moving company so getting removal quotes is something I need to do as we don’t want to spend out too much money moving all of our furniture around.
If you are moving to the UK, you can book a moving company with WhatManandVan. It has a large database of Man and Van companies in Bristol, London, Liverpool, and many cities across the UK. If you’re local to Fort Worth in America, then the Fort Worth Moving Company is there for you. Their job is getting your belongings from Point A or Point B and it doesn’t matter if it’s across state or just down the road.
While we’re living with my parents the whole premise of this is that we can save money and try to boost our renovation money so we don’t want to be spending out more than we need to. A storage facility is something we definitely need for our furniture and other items which just won’t fit anywhere else but I don’t want to be spending more money than I need to. When we get close to having a date I need to research storage facilities and compare the costs so we pick the right place.
As we’re moving to my parents we can get all of our mail forwarded as early as possible to ensure that nothing gets missed. A few months before I need to set up redirection on my mail so anything which falls through the gaps doesn’t still go to my old flat as I don’t want to miss anything especially bills etc.
As I am going to be applying for a mortgage sometime in the year after moving I need to make sure that my banks have all of my up-to-date info so ensuring that they know I’ve moved back home is essential as it tracks my housing history.
The above costs are things which when I move I’ll no longer need so I’ll want to cancel my broad brand provider a month before I move as it may take that long to cancel and get rid of. For contents insurance and my TV license I just need to contact the relevant places and cancel them so I no longer get renewals or continued communication from them. It’s going to be nice having fewer direct debits every month once all of these things are cancelled.
When we have a date for moving I am going to contact my electricity and water providers to let them know and find out the process for when I move out. It’s likely that I will need a final meter reading for both which may involve the companies having to come out so I want to plan this in advance so that I don’t get any unexpected bills months after I move out.

Oh man, you are so much more organised than I am! I completely forgot to take final readings or tell my utilities that I had moved and I got stung with a nasty bill. I also got hit with an early exit fee on my internet provider which wasn’t the greatest.
