I worked in a jeweller for around 8 years around sixth form and university and it is from there that my obsession with watches spiralled slightly. Up until I was 16 I only had cheap Argos watches which were more character/ fashion based than anything else and as soon as I started my job I yearned for something more. During my years working there, I worked through a lot of different brands but as I’ve gotten that bit older my tastes have matured and I can feel the pull of luxury style watches a lot more.
Luxury watches are generally made out of the highest quality materials be that sapphire crystal glass to eliminate the chance of scratches on the glass, or higher quality plating for gold coloured watches. Luke bought a beautiful Tissot watch when we were in New York last year which is his dress watch and it’s the kind of thing that’s going to last and he’ll be able to wear for years to come. Buying cheaper watches might seem better in the short term but if you’re having to replace them once a year it’s not a great longer-term investment.
When you get into luxury watches you find a lot of them don’t need a traditional battery where you’d need to change it every year or two. Solar watches are great as they store battery power from light – both natural and artificial thankfully – and when it’s dark or there’s no light around they carry on working from the stored up battery power. Mechanical watches store energy in the same way but work on you twisting the winder when you start wearing it and then energy is stored from wrist movement. I love the idea of this as if you have a dress watch which you don’t wear all the time you don’t have to worry about constantly changing the battery as it’s working while you’re not wearing it.
I don’t know about you but I wear a watch every single day and my wrist feels so bare if I ever forget to wear one so for me, a luxury watch is such a good investment as it’s something I know I’ll get the wear out of it. But if you decide to have a dress watch that you may wear more on occasion it’s still going to get a lot of wear over your lifetime, I know my mum had a gold watch she was bought for 21st and even 25 years later she was still wearing it, so that’s an investment and a half.
I always love the idea of having something which holds a lot of value and sentiment that you can pass down through the generations and having a luxury watch does just that. While I might not plan to have children of my own this would be such a nice present to pass to a niece or nephew further down the line. I know how great it felt when my nan or my mum would pass on items of jewellery to me which they’d had and I care for them so much more knowing it’s something that has been passed on.
And finally, there’s no denying that there are lots of beautiful designs around and they’re timeless in their looks. I’ve loved fashion watches over the years but when that colour or pattern or shape goes out of fashion the watch just loses its appeal. There are beautiful styles of watches such as this Cartier two-tone watch which is a total classic and something I’ve seen around for a long time which isn’t likely to ever go ‘out of fashion’. If it’s more of a luxury dress watch then this stone set Omega is stunning and such a beautiful size, as larger watches might be in fashion now but a decade or two down the line will they be?

I love my apple watch but my husband invests in luxury watches, I always know what to buy him on his birthday!
I love watches and have managed to get quite a collection. I think the more expensive ones definitely last longer!
love the idea of it becoming an heirloom. I’ve not owned a watch in ages – maybe I’ll have a look x
I totally agree with this, I think there are certain things which should be invested in and a watch is one of them. This is something I would like to buy my other half….maybe for a big birthday!
I’d love a luxury watch one day! I always admire my mum’s mechanical one, I’m always so lazy when it comes to changing batteries.
Great points here and yes a quality watch is a great investment piece, I get so much wear out my cath k watch xx
I have a couple of luxury watches in my collection and they really are such a good investment. Not sure I’m tempted to sell any yet though – but they’re lovely to look at! x
For many years I thought to buy quality and expensive watch a waste of money but now that I have a few I appreciate them much better
Watches like this are always lovely to have. You always have something super special to wear on nights out etc. Which is how I do it!
My husband loves his luxury watches. He doesn’t wear jewellery, but watches are his thing.
My husband’s father was a jeweller and sold many a watch. My husband has some lovely watches but nothing like a Tag or a Rolex. I love the idea of it becoming a family heirloom.
I’ve never really been someone who is into watches but you make some good points – I actually really love the idea of passing down a family heirloom!
