How We’ve Planned Our Kitchen Renovation

*This is a collaborative post but all thoughts on our kitchen renovation are my own

Even before we started looking for a house I knew the kitchen was an important part for me. I’d had no say in the kitchen within my shared ownership flat. But it’s a space I wanted to enjoy more by cooking more at home, but also entertaining.

As soon as we first viewed our house we saw the potential in opening out the dining room and kitchen to make one large space. In our minds, we knew we wouldn’t use a dining room as much on its own. But having it there by the kitchen would drive us to use it more. Plus when entertaining we’d be able to use the whole space. As soon as we got the keys it was time to check the supports then knock down the adjoining wall. The second it came down we knew we’d made the right decision as the room looks incredible.

You can see more of the monthly developments of the journey here. The kitchen renovation was a big project for us and once the wall was down we didn’t do much to do it as we knew the kitchen would be an aspect we’d tackle later in our renovation.

Planning our kitchen renovation

We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted in our kitchen with tall cabinets down one side with the oven/ microwave/ warming drawer within this area. Then lower cabinets only around the sink and an island. We had it visualised and thankfully the measurements added up to make it a reality.

We used an online tool to plan every part of the cabinets from the spaces for appliances to what shelves and drawers we wanted. For me having plenty of storage was important. But we knew we didn’t want loads of cabinets everywhere so we were clever with our kitchen renovation ideas.

Once it was planned we made a huge order and it’s all due to arrive in mid-July. I’m so excited to see it start to come together and I can’t wait to show you around and explain our decisions for it all once it’s finished.

Choosing a worktop

Now a worktop is one of the things we haven’t ordered yet as we want to get the kitchen in so someone can come out and measure. We thought about granite worktops, to begin with, but think we’re settled on quartz worktops as it’s pretty hard-wearing, heat-resistant, and not porous.

We need a large piece for our island which is about 2.4m in length and about a metre in width. So it’s a large space. We also want a piece to go over the whole side of the island. This will mean if you’re looking up from the dining room table you won’t see underneath the breakfast bar overhang.

Then around our sink, we’re keen to get a sink that fits underneath so it’s seamless between the workplace and the sink. And then draining lines drilled out of the quartz so it’s part of the work surface. I’m glad we know what we want, but we need a professional to come around and measure up etc.

This is just such an exciting project and I cannot wait to see the final result. I bet there is so much out there and if you are not firm on a budget you could get carried away

Oh you’re so right, we had to settle on rough budgets just to narrow down what we could realistically afford but also then where to look x

You made a good choice for the work top. Granite is porous and stains are hard to come off of it. I can’t wait to see once your kitchen renovation is complete. It sure sounds like a dream kitchen!

It sounds like an exciting project, great idea to knock the wall down – there must be a lot of space now! I would one day love the same, to entertain my friends and family in a gorgeous space!

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yeah it does have so much space and it’s so nice when you’re entertaining to not feel separate when you’re cooking/ dishing up x

I love renovating old rooms finding new design ideas! Before few days I renovated my kitchen and my bedroom. I feel so great when I am looking them! They are so beautiful!

It’s always a nice feeling when you look at something you designed/ created and feel good about it x

I love renovating and designing rooms but I can be a bit too quick to make decisions and regret it later. I cannot wait to find a dream home that I can renovate.

I am looking forward to seeing the complete project. I am jealous, you have such a large kitchen. For me the kitchen is very important as well, the bigger the better. I am lucky that in my home the kitchen is a decent size, with plenty of empty counters where I can cook properly.

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yeah the kitchen is so important, I think you’re more likely to enjoy using the space if you have the room x

A few years ago we decided to revamp our kitchen. It started off as a simple upgrade of kitchen units but it turned in to us completely changing the whole lay out, moving our door to the garden and also our window. It was the best thing we did as we have so much more space now and lots more light.
