Home Renovation Diaries – Month 5, The Final One

Welcome to the fifth and final in my home renovation diaries series. I’ve been documenting our renovation journey since we got the keys at the end of March. But now we’ve moved into the house and the bulk of the renovation work in the main house is done I’ll be doing more room reveals/ posts on specific parts of the house.

We moved into the house officially on 13th August which we were really happy about. Yes, there are still things to do, boxes to empty, furniture to arrive but it’s a liveable space. And being in the house makes it so much easier to finish the work. Luke can do a few odd jobs after work and not have to worry about driving back home afterwards.

Housewide changes

In the month 4 home renovation diaries I spoke about not actually being able to use the lights. Well, Luke sorted out the fuse board pretty quickly and finished all the wiring so everything works. All of our lights are installed as well which makes a huge difference to the look of the house.

We finally got internet installed at the end of July and Luke sorted out a mesh/ data system across the house to give us the best coverage. I won’t begin to try and understand what he did but our signal is consistent around the house which is important for us. As soon as the internet was working we installed our Ring Doorbell which has been amazing. I’m literally obsessed with watching the live footage as soon as any motion is detected. It’s been great to be able to speak to delivery drivers at the house when we’ve not been in as well. We bought the full Ring system with floodlight and alarm system but that’s still to be installed.

Last time I updated in my renovation diaries we were a few days away from having carpet. We had all of our carpets in four rooms and the upstairs hallway fitted in a single day. And it feels incredible underfoot. We’re so happy with our flooring choices and I can’t wait for cosy Autumnal nights now. As I’m writing this our internal doors are just being fitted so by the time this goes live we should have useable doors. Which means no awkward encounters when you need to use in the loo in the ensuite.

Renovation diaries stairs/ hallway update

We had our hall runner installed this month and it’s amazing what a difference it makes to the staircase. It’s so soft and comfortable to walk up and down. And the carpet blocks out some of the noise you get when walking up and down wooden stairs. We have some stair rods which need to be installed and I can’t wait to see how they’ll look when in.

We’ve utilised our loft space and stored a lot of boxes up there during my unpacking phase. We have all of our Christmas/ Halloween stuff. But also old clothes, scuba equipment, DVD cases and so much more. I don’t know how we lived without a loft space.

Ensuite update

I’ve done my full ensuite reveal this week so I won’t go into too much detail on this room. But since last month we had the shower unit wired up, the hot water turned on and the shower system fully working. For the first two days after moving in we only had cold water so my hair had seen better days. But now it’s fully useable it’s an amazing space to be in.

All of the storage has been filled and utilised as well which is one of my favourite things to do.

Renovation diaries- Downstairs update

Our kitchen is 100% complete now and it’s everything we dreamed of. Luke and his dad worked so hard building all the cabinets and fitting all of the appliances. We moved in without a proper worktop as we needed someone to come out measure up and give us a quote. We had assumed it would take quite a while to source and fit but we had it in less than 6 days. So our quartz worktops are all in and the light tone makes such a difference to the space.

When I do the room reveal for our kitchen/ diner you’ll be able to see in more detail. The only main thing left to do is get some beading/ finishing stuff for around the door and window. And then get everything sealed around cabinets etc.

Our living room hasn’t really changed too much since the last renovation diary other than furniture being in it. But the window has been fitted between there and my office, although it needs some sealing around the edges.

Our downstairs toilet has now been fully ripped out ready to be replaced. We may have to hold tight on this for a few weeks as the tiler we use is on holiday. But I can’t wait for this room to be finished.

My office update

As I knew I needed to be able to work in this space Luke and his dad built me a custom desk area which is huge and I love it. I feel very lucky to have a designated space to work in and then be able to leave when it’s ‘my time’. I’ve had some furniture delivered this week and once they’re in place and organised this room will be pretty much done. The next stage will be the decorative aspect as I have a lot of pictures and prints that I want to go up in the space.

There’s still a bunch of little things to be done around the house alongside some bigger things like the downstairs toilet which should be done in the next 6 weeks. Then our bigger projects after that are the garage renovation and the bathroom refit upstairs. Both of these we’re hoping to have finished by Christmas.
