*This is a collaborative post but all thoughts on an Italian adventure are my own
Italy will always hold a special place in mine and Luke’s hearts as it was where we spent our first anniversary. And this was our first big trip away together. We spent a week there splitting our time over Rome and Venice. But around this, I’ve been to Italy a number of our other times also visiting Naples and Ischia.
An Italian cross country trip is something we’d love to do again as there are so many beautiful spots on the mainland and surrounding islands for an amazing trip.
I’ve already explored one island in Italy but I’d love to head over to Sicily and explore even more. During a trip we could head over there for a few days and going on an escorted tour of Sicily will give an unforgettable experience. Being in the med Sicily tends to be a good temperature in the colder months so I’d be tempted to go in Autumn time for some late sunshine.
There’s an active volcano on the island which is still a bit of a baby, formed just 40,000 years ago. Despite being active it’s famous for pretty small explosions. And you can trek and climb into its crater which sounds amazing.
Following on from one Italian island to another; Capri which is about an 80-minute ferry ride from Naples. One of the best-known attractions is the Blue Grotto which is a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue. This happens when sunlight passes through an underwater cave and it sounds absolutely magical. The pictures of the island I have seen are stunning with the steep cliffs, deep blue sea and villas.
I’ve seen quite a few multi-day tours you can take to the island from Naples so this would be the ideal way to see the island. And then maybe relax for a few days on the beach with a cocktail.
I couldn’t do an Italian adventure without spending a day in Pisa. We passed through the city when we did our adventure and next time we’d decided we’d like to do a middle of the road stop. Of course, the leaning tower is an iconic spot and somewhere I’d love to see in person. But it’s not just about the architectural project gone wrong as there are plenty of Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas to explore.
One of my friends went to Florence and fell head over heels in love with the city so I’d definitely add it to our Italian adventure. There’s a lot of cultures as it’s the birthplace of Renaissance there with art galleries and museums so you can get lost in creativity. And this would be a lovely contrast from the beaches and landscapes of other areas of Italy. The cityscapes are what I think of when I think of Italy.
Choose holiday villas in Florence for the most relaxing way to enjoy the city.
We fell in love with Venice when we went, even if the weather wasn’t great and we experienced some flooding. The whole city had such a charm to it. We loved the fact that there were no cars across the majority of the city and you can just wander the streets and bridges. Although next time we’d plan our Italian adventure for Springtime to try and avoid the floods. It’s so sad to think that the city won’t last forever before it’s wiped out by the sea. So we want to experience it while we can.
Again Naples is somewhere we’ve been before for part of a day during trips and layovers. But I’ve to spend some proper time there and stay in the city. As Naples was where the very first pizza was created I’d love to do a food tour here (any excuse to eat loads of pizza!) Plus you can head out into the Bay of Naples and take day trips out to the islands. So this would be an amazing base for trips to Capri, Ischia and so much more.
There are so many more places we’d love to add onto our Italian adventure including Milan, Verona and the Amalfi Coast. So we’re just going to have to keep going back.

I have never been but it has always been somewhere I wanted to visit. It is such a beautiful place with so much history and culture.
I hope you make it there very soon x
I have only ever been to Venice and that was years ago, I really wish that we could go back as I had such a great time and would love to take my daughter there.

I would love to see Italy one day. My grandmother was Italian and her mother came to America from L’Aquila Italy
Another one of those places that I really need to tick off my travel bucket list. I would really love to have a chance to visit Italy. I have read travel books and blogs about Italy and the places worth visiting once you are there. I would love to visit Sicily and see Mt. Etna. That would be such a memorable experience for me.
