Top Tips To Transform Your Garden On A Budget
*This is a collaborative post but all thoughts on how to transform your garden on a budget are my own
Last March we picked up the keys to our new home and we spent months renovating the inside. The plan was inside last year and outside in 2021. But we were way too optimistic with how much we’d get done in 9 months, especially during a global pandemic. We managed to get a lot done but we still have a few renovations to complete before we turn our attention to the garden.
But as we’re fully in the house I want to make the garden look as nice as possible for this year before we renovate in the coming years. The biggest thing to us to order was about transforming the garden on a budget. We don’t want to spend loads of money on it only to rip it apart in a few year’s time.
Here are my top tips to transform your garden on a budget
Replace or repaint the fences
Our house is on a corner so we have responsibility for all of the fences surrounding our back garden. But this is a massive win for us as it means we can make sure they all look the same. We want to replace all of the fences because some of them aren’t in good condition, and we want to get slightly taller ones. So we’ll be pricing this up to make a decision as to whether we do that this summer for some extra privacy.
If we deem it a bit too expensive I want to paint the fences to give them all a fresh look. And going for something like a grey or darker colour will really transform the garden on a budget.
Buy some garden furniture
One thing we do need to buy is garden furniture. We may not go all out and buy the set of our dreams, but we plan on picking up a nice table with a few chairs. This will give us the option to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine that I hope we have.
There will also be space in the future to have a kids playhouse or toys if we have kids.
Put down artificial grass
We have a good area for grass, but the grass itself is in really bad condition. Even when we renovate we won’t be changing the area for grass and we need to replace what’s there anyway. So I’m thinking that we replace what’s there with artificial grass. It might feel like a bigger outlay of cost, to begin with, but for a garden on a budget, it’s great as it requires much less maintenance.
After finding an artificial grass supplier the next step would be to get some samples to look at colour and feel. The biggest consideration I’d want is that the grass was soft underfoot. Especially as we hope to get kittens next year so I would want it to be soft underfoot for them.
If you have pets that love to play outside on the grass, Grass Warehouse recommend a specific pet-friendly variety of artificial turf, one with added drainage holes and a more resilient pile that will resist against scratches and general wear over time.
Transform your garden on a budget with some outdoor lighting
The lighting on the side of our house is quite old-fashioned and not to our tastes. And after swapping out the light at the front of our house we want to change them out for something modern. You can make a difference to your garden on a budget just by updating things like lights. There are some lights you can pick up online for under £20, and lighting up the space will make a big impact.
I think we’ll be way more likely to sit outside and enjoy the space if it looks fresh, clean, and modern. And outdoor lighting can do that.
Transform your garden on a budget by power cleaning
I know our decking is incredibly dirty and needs a bit of TLC so power cleaning it and the surrounding areas will make a huge impact. We can first use a cordless leaf blower to get rid of any debris on the decking before borrowing a pressure washer from family so it won’t cost us anything to complete. But just having a fresh space to spend time in will make a massive impact. Plus doing this will help us to evaluate the condition of the decking and how much we’ll want to replace when the time comes.

One thing I have not done anhything with since I bought my home last Feb is the garden and I am hoping to repaint the fence and get rid of my current grass.
Those little things will make such a difference x
Funnily enough we were just talking about the need to jet wash yesterday, It is usually the first job of the spring. I have big plans for the garden this year. It is such an odd garden that we have, but I think it could be amazing.

I totally put off anything to do with the garden, it is not my forte! I had to repair some of my decking last year, it was a job and a half and made me realise I need to keep on top of it in order to make my life easier! As for fence panels, I share with some awesome neighbours and unfortunately have to deal with one who is a pleb and took the fence panels out. For what reason I have no idea, the guy is a nutjob… he has just hacksawed through another neighbour’s water pipe. My top tip for you is befriend your neighbours!!!! Sim x
Yeah gardening isn’t my forte so between my fiance and my dad they’ll have plenty of work to do I’m sure haha. I only have a neighbour on one side and then at the end of the garden so I’m very lucky and because we’re responsible for them all thankfully we can replace them all to be the same x
It’s good to have tips that are budget friendly. SO many assume that making improvements to a garden will cost the earth but that isn’t always true.
Some great ideas and tips here. We d need to work out our garden and were considering getting some artificial grass so will get that ordered.

Fantastic ideas, particularly the artificial grass. I’m in a new build so our grass was only laid in August. It’s still in relatively good condition but will only be so if we avoid it when it’s wet.

Ooooh, fab tips. I love out artificial grass, but I always feel so guilty it’s not very good for the environment. The main problem with my garden it that it’s very messy!
