Future Home – Garden Inspiration

Gardens and patio area inspiration

AD - This is a collaborative post but all thoughts and opinions are my own

I have lived in flats for the past 7 and a half years so have next to no experience with planning a garden. The small balcony space in my old flat was as close as I’ve gotten with soft fake grass on the floor, a comfortable rattan sofa, a fake plant, gnome and a BBQ we never used. So my experience is pretty limited when it comes to garden inspiration but one thing I do know about myself is that I’m not all that good caring for plants and keeping them alive so I’m very keen on having quite a low maintenance garden that we’ll probably get a gardener in to help us plan. The plants which I do have in the garden need to be quite self sufficient and not need constant watering.

Garden Inspiration – Home security

One thing which we’ll incorporate into our garden and outdoor areas is lots of home security as I’m a little paranoid about this. Being previously in a secure block of flats I’ve been in a bit of a bubble and I’ll probably feel pretty exposed when we’re in a house so I’ll want quite a bit of security. This will start with a home alarm like the Verisure Smart Alarms which we’ll have located in our hallway and allow us to set an alarm in the house in case anyone wants to get in.

But then I want to have cameras around my house so in the garden by any back entrances and around the front of our house. You can get really smart ones now which notify you when there’s movement within the area and you can get an alert to your map and even a live stream so you can see what’s going on. This would tie in well with a camera fronted doorbell which I want which will allow me to talk to someone if they’re at the front door and I’m not.

Garden planters

Garden Inspiration – Patio decking

One of the main things I want is a decked patio area which will have comfortable seating and provide a nice area to sit and relax. I don’t spend a lot of time outdoors because I don’t really have the option and we don’t want to always be going out as sometimes I have work to do and most of the time we like to cook for ourselves so having that space in our garden would be lovely. I will most certainly need some form of umbrella/ shaded area though as I can get headaches if I’m in the direct sun for too long. Gardening is one of the areas Luke isn’t particuarly well versed in so we’ll be getting garden quotes to get someone else in to do that for us.

Garden Inspiration – Planters

Something that I do love are planters as I think that they look neat and are practical because you can move them around if you’re having a rejig of the garden without needing to dig up plants, and it means you can make everything look that bit neater. I love the green wooden planters on the left as they have such a clean finish to them and you can then put the planters around the edge of the grass in your garden or on the patio area if you don’t have a lot of other space.

I know we probably won’t have a massive grass area as it’s not something which is a priority to us so planters give us that green affect without having to have loads of grass.

herb garden

Garden Inspiration – Herb garden

One thing that I do know I want is a herb garden as I think that fresh herbs make all the difference when it comes to cooking so this is a massive priority to me. Until we know what house we’ll we in I don’t know if there will be space in the kitchen on the wind sill or whether it really needs to be in the garden. I love the idea of growing your own veg so maybe a full grown veg patch would be better suited.

I’d love to have something tiered like the pink shelves or the metal shelving on the top left to house them all in with a separate pot per herb as I think not only is this practical but it also looks really good and provides a lot of greenery without it being plants which have little or no purpose.

Bar and entertaining space in the garden

Garden inspiration – Bar and entertaining space

The final thing I’d love to have in the garden is some entertaining space alongside the decked patio. The table and chairs on the left are absolutely stunning but I know garden furniture can be quite pricey so this probably won’t be one of our priority house purchases but definitely something I’d love to have further down the line so we can have friends and family over for food and drinks.

The image on the right is total bar goals. Ideally I’d love to have something that wheels so we can have it indoors and then roll it outdoors when we’re entertaining to add glasses, mixers and bottles of gin too as it gives it a multi purpose.

It’s great to have inspiration posts of how your home or garden could look in the future. I love the DIY bar and the planter boxes.

Oh wow how lovely would it be to have olive trees growing in your garden?!

Oh I love the idea of an outdoor bar! I didn’t even know that was a thing. I live in a flat too and we have a balcony with some potted plants, its just not the same though!

I’m not very green fingered I have to admit but I love having a garden and being able to get out into it. I’m not sure I could go back to having no garden these days. I hope you get a lovely one when you move.

You picked some really amazing things here for a lovely garden. I think I would pretty much pick the same items as you, I love everything you had to show.

I am in the same boat! I would love to have outdoor space for entertaining and just enjoying the weather but it’s condo life for now. The outdoor bar you pinned looks so fun!

I think your taste in garden design is very similar to mine, because I love all of these. I’d thought of getting one of those camera doorbells to stop me having to go downstairs from my office every time the doorbell goes!!

I’d love to create a similar outdoor space for us too, just that neat tidy space which can be enjoyed in good weather.

Lovely post! Own garden would be a beautiful and relaxing thing to have. Maybe one day I’ll have enough time and knowledge to get one too. 🙂

I know what you mean – I lived in a flat for years and when we finally got a place with a garden, we were out there every opportunity we got! Made it look lovely! These are great ideas for inspiration.

I love potted plants on stands, they are so vintage looking! And of course they are great for small gardens too.
