*This is a collaborative post on how to save money when booking a holiday

As the sun has started shining more in the UK (0r at least it is when I’m writing this) you may be thinking about booking a holiday. The past few years have been tough. Some of us have been lucky enough to get away, but others have preferred to stay on UK shores. But 2022 seems to be the year where travel is possible again, reasonably easily for some locations. Even those still keen to avoid the crowds of airports and the packed-out planes can now easily book private travel with companies like Jettly. But with the prices of pretty much everything going up you may have less disposable money. So you may need to save money when booking a holiday, and I’ve got you covered with some of my top tips.

Save money when booking a holiday by: be flexible with days and dates

It’s almost always more expensive to fly out somewhere on a Friday or Saturday as they’re preferable days. But save money when booking a holiday by being as flexible as possible. Opting to fly mid-week, or at more unusual hours of the day can save you plenty of money.

And if you don’t have school-age kids make sure to compare term time travel to that outside. You’ll probably be shocked how much money you can save going a few weeks earlier or later.

Use Google Flights for cheap holiday inspiration. Click ‘Explore Destinations’ and it will suggest the most affordable flight times for your picked destination.

Compare packages to buying individually

Sometimes a package can work out cheaper once you factor in transfers, flights, accommodation, etc. But other times it can be much cheaper to book individually.

Sites like SkyScanner can help you secure the best deal with your flights. And if you download the Chrome extension ‘CheaperThere’ when you’re on comparison sites you can check if that is the best price for the flight or hotel.

Save money when booking a holiday by: going incognito

I’ve spoken a few times about using an incognito browser when looking at flights, and it’s so important. Travel companies will track your interest and if you keep clicking on a hotel or flight they may increase the price. Increasing the price is designed to prompt you to think that you need to book there and then before it goes up again.

By using a new incognito browser each time you’ll have a fresh internet bill of health and the site will have no idea if you’ve visited once or 50 times.

Save money when booking a holiday by: considering a hostel

Accommodation can be pretty pricey when you go away. And you may not even be spending that much time there, especially if you’re on a city break. Hostels aren’t all for backpackers and youngsters, and you don’t even need to share with people. I’ve stayed in quite a few hostels that have had private rooms and bathrooms. But because the amenities there are more limited than a hotels it worked out cheaper.

If your opting for a more relaxing holiday see if a villa or apartment may work out better. This way you’ll be able to cook some meals for yourself and not have to pay to eat out all of the time.

Yeah I always try to think carefully about booking in luggage, even if it’s combining two people’s things into one case rather than two x

I never think of using my incognito window and really should use it more. It would be interesting to see just how much they change the prices depending on which window you use.

I have switched to hand luggage only. It’s very freeing not to panic over the weight in the bags (I used to take so much stuff) and it saves me money too (because I’d often pay over the weight limit fees).

I try and do that for shorter travels but I really struggle with longer ones, but we try to take one case between two to save a bit x
