I hate paying full price for anything which is part of the reason why I love online shopping so much. Whether it’s an item of furniture or a new top I will browse to find the best deal possible. And there are loads of ways to save when shopping online, it’s just a matter of looking.
At the moment we’re all tightening our belts so saving a bit of money is even more important. Here are my top tips to save when shopping online.
A lot of stores will offer new customer discounts, but there’s only so many email addresses you can use to sign up to. If you’re an iPhone user you can create a new account using hide my email and bam you’re a new customer. Some retailers may start to recognise this and only offer a certain number of accounts per household. But it’s worth trying.
A lot of companies will offer discounts or rewards when you sign up to their newsletter. Things such as 10% off of your first order, or free delivery are very common offers for signing up. And you can always unsubscribe after you’ve placed and received your order.
There are some items that don’t go on sale very often so when they do it’s worth stocking up if it’s something you use often. This includes things luxury hair or skin care, home fragrance or good quality underwear. Only stock up on things that won’t run out of date before you get to using it. And remember it’s only a saving if you’d have bought it anyway.
I love a good loyalty card, especially when you can store them on your phone and not have to carry around physical cards. There are lots of shops that have loyalty schemes where you may get discount codes, free gifts or collect points towards future shops.
My favourites include:
You don’t have to be attending university or college to be eligible for student discount. Some online course providers, especially those from professional boards qualify you for a TOTUM Pro student card. Individual discounts can range from 35% off a pizza delivery to 25% off a clothing haul.
All you have to do is search ‘Retailer name discount code’ on Google and any available codes will show up. Alternatively you can get a browser plugin such as Honey that can scan for discounts at checkout and apply them for you
Some retailers will allow you to use multiple discount codes at once so have all the available codes ready before you click check out.
For this to work you need to be logged into your account so the retailer knows who is shopping. But if you browse and fill up your basket with items and then leave you may an email reminding you to checkout. Sometimes brands will include discount or promotional codes to convince you to go back.
Some brands offer a special discount scheme for NHS and blue light workers. All you have to do is look at the brands website, or the blue light card app to see who offers it.
Not everything you buy has to be new. You can save money by buying second hand and it is much better for the environment. There are lots of things you should look at buying second hand including clothing and books. For clothing check out apps such as Vinted and Depop.
Refer a friend schemes can be great as both you and the person you refer get some sort of freebie or promotion. For example you can get a free flower delivery from Freddie’s Flowers by using my code RHIANW5399 and I’d get a bunch half price. If the site you’re buying from had a refer a friend scheme ask your friends if anyone has a code. And if not look for one online.
I have a few delivery passes including ASOS and Amazon Prime as it can work out at a great saving if you buy from places regularly. Of course with Prime there are loads of other benefits. But with ASOS I love it because no matter the value of my purchase I get free next day delivery. So I don’t have to buy loads of extra items in order to qualify.
Usually opting to pick up your item from a store can be either free or cheaper than home delivery. This is only worth it if the collect point is local and not out of the way.
If you don’t ask you don’t get. So ask via live chat or social media if a brand has any discount codes available or promotions lined up. You never know you may be lucky to blag one.
