It’s cold, it’s dark, it’s pretty miserable and chances are it’s been a tough few weeks. Now’s the perfect time to plan for the year ahead, and think further afield than January (if you’ve not already).
January is the perfect time to reflect and think about what you really want. That could be in life, your career, your relationships, your finances. While I don’t like the idea of putting things off until the new year, there’s no denying a fresh year can make a big difference.
Before looking ahead it’s good to look back and reflect. 2023 was a tough year for a lot of people, especially when it came to finances. But now’s a time to reflect on all the things you’re grateful for and the things you’re proud of. The big and the small things.
This is a good step to remind us how far we’ve come and have a sense of perspective. It’s like a performance review of your own life to show what a great job you’re doing, then allowing you to think about what you’d do differently in the future.
What your priorities are and how you present them will be different from person to person.
For me a typed list works best as I can chop and change things, and I love ticking something off. For others a vision board to represent what they want works better.
But don’t just think about the physical things you want like a new car, think about the feelings. Do you want to feel financially free (so your goal may be clearing off debt), or do you want to be more creative (so your goal may be prioritising time for hobbies).
Having clear priorities will help you plan for the year ahead and work out what you need to do to move further towards your goals. One of my goals is around my health and my weight, so I have an end goal and interim goals to make sure I keep on track. Similar to this my financial goals are broken into manageable chunks.
A lot of your goals may not be achievable in 2024, or you may have broken down a larger goal. So now’s the time to think further ahead, what do you want in the next 5-10 years, or even longer. Do you want to move to part-time work in order to have more freedom? Perhaps you want to start a family, or move country. Or you could be thinking ahead to retirement.
I’m a great believer that (within reason) you can achieve anything you want in life. You just need to have an achievable plan, and do it. It might not be easy, and it might take time. But if it’s important to you you’ll make it work.
Make a big list of everything you’d like. It doesn’t mean you’ll do all of them, but it will help you to consider your priorities.
Such great advice to start my planning for 2024 – I guess I should have already started but it’s never too late! I agree with the idea of looking back before looking forward.
Never too late to start planning x
I try to do this in order to be prepared for whatever may come my way. sometimes though it seems difficult to look ahead
This is so true, we are looking forward and do agree on looking back at 2023 so we can move forward and make 2024 a more positive year
These are great tips for everyone. Especially those who struggle with how to manage or plan.
I found that thinking of my priorities were huge help of planning for the year ahead. Clearing out my thoughts and having a focal point really changed a lot!
So true, you need to have a bit of focus to know what you’re reaching for x
I will definitely be making a list. I would love to start planning a family holiday and putting money away for the summer so we can have some days out together.
I am loving your tips and especially the suggestion to reflect from the past year to know what you want to accomplish this year. I also like that you said to ficus on what you are grateful for from 2023…. as looking at the positives is a must for me….I always see the glass as half full š Great post and thanks for sharing!
We’re always too hard on ourselves, you’ve got to look at what went well and what you achieved x
It’s important to set goals and even more important to create a blueprint for those plans. A list is a wonderful way to keep track as well.
This blog post provides a timely and encouraging perspective on the often challenging month of January. Acknowledging the difficulties and dreariness that many people face during this time, the post advocates for using this period to plan for the upcoming year. The emphasis on reflection, both on the challenges faced in the previous year and on personal achievements, adds a positive and empowering touch. By urging readers to consider their goals not just for January but for the entire year, the post offers a refreshing approach to New Year’s resolutions.
When I first read the title I thought there was no way I could plan beyond a year, but your right, sometimes you have multi-step goals! Thank you for sharing these tips.
You don’t need to be super organised, it’s all about having a focus x
