Five Ways To Make Money On Your Blog

Blogging and social media

If you’ve followed by five step guide to starting your own blog, you’re well on your way to make money on your blog.

I started my blog over ten years ago and a lot has changed in the industry. It took me quite a few years to get to a point where I could start to make money. But for the past five or so years I’ve managed to make a bit of income through my blog. In the 2022/2023 tax year it came to just over £20K. I am hoping 2023/2024’s figure will be similar but I’ve definitely noticed a drop in budgets/ the amount of collaborations.

Most of my income comes from just one revenue stream. But here are five of the ways you can make money on your blog.

Sponsored or guest content

Almost all of the income from my blog comes from sponsored or guest content. I classify sponsored content as pieces that I write that will be in collaboration with a brand. Whereas guest posts are pre-written pieces of content that a brand sends me to share on my blog. The former posts are housed in a specific guest post area so my audience know the words themselves aren’t my own.

If your blog has good authority online and search engines respect it then it’s beneficial for a brand to have a link on your website. Payment tends to be influenced by the domain authority your website has and traffic that it generates.

If you’re looking to accept paid or collaborative posts then make sure you have a clear contact page. This way brands can reach out directly yo you. Starting to get paid can be tricky but there are a number of great Facebook groups you can join to help. And keep an eye on hashtags on X like #BloggersWanted or #PRRequest.

Make money on your blog through affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is when you promote and link to a product or service. Then you earn a small commission from the company when people purchase.

Awin is the most popular affiliate network, but there’s are a lot more options out there depending on what you’d be promoting. For example there’s Amazon Associates if you promote Amazon products a lot.

I use Awin occasionally but because most of my content doesn’t promote goods I don’t make a lot of money this way. Sometimes with services such as Monzo or Quidco I use direct refer a friend links.

Paid advertising

Most websites you see will have ads somewhere on the page, usually in the sidebar, footer or within the content of your blog. Most people use a network like Google Adsense or Mediavine and you get a small payment when someone clicks on an ad. You can also set up your own advertising packages for brands and companies.

I’m not a fan of sites that have a lot of ads, especially popups and within the content. Personally I tried paid ads but the return wasn’t good enough for me to justify the way it made my website look. Generally you need to be generating a lot of traffic to get good ad income, so this is a revenue stream that I do not have.

Make money through social media

Most bloggers have accompanying social media channels that they use to promote their work and as an extension of their brand. For me it’s a little difference because my brand is just me. So my social media is both my business and personal account in one. But you can make money through social media posts as well.

Much like on your blog a brand or company may pay you to promote a service or talk about a product.

Product reviews

Product reviews happen when a company send you an item to try out/ use. Then you write about your experience on your blog. When you do this you need to disclose that you were gifted the item to be transparent to your readers. And it’s part of the industry regulatory guidelines as well.

A lot of the time companies tend to offer products to review with no additional cost, but sometimes you may get paid for product reviews. Payment tends to depend on the value of the item, and your influence within the industry.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money, especially if you get a lot of traffic. You can really move a lot of people through your links.

Despite my traffic I’ve never found they work too well for me, I think due to the type of content I create. But that’s fine they can’t work for everyone x

I find affiliate links can be a great way to make a little extra and of course sponsored posts too. I have also noticed a drop in collaborations recently so am exploring other avenues.

I think most people have seen a drop and it’s a bit worrying. The Google update really hasn’t helped x

These are all great ways to earn money from a blog yet it’s important to note earning from a blog doesn’t happen overnight. Having ads on a blog is a good way to make extra income if you get enough people visiting.

This was such a helpful share. I’ll have to try out the guest content, never thought of that!

All great ways to make some extra money! I haven’t had a ton of luck with affiliate marketing, but I don’t really have a niche for my blog, so I think that is the main reason why.

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yeah sometimes it can be tough depending on what you talk about, but every little adds up doesn’t it x
