Once the festive period is over and we enter a new decade I approach my 30th birthday. If I thought about turning 30 a few years ago I’d have panicked. But I’m actually very excited about turning 30 as I know your thirties are meant to be some of your best years. And I know that my 30th year on this planet is going to be a big one!
I don’t tend to make resolutions as if I want to change something I do it there and then. But year after year I make goals for myself in order to have some direction. And as I’ve said 2020 is going to be huge, the biggest year in my life overall. Here are some of my biggest goals for the new year and new decade.
For anyone who read my blog before you’ve probably heard me bang on about my house buying process. This is the biggie for 2020 and pretty the biggest thing to happen in my life. After selling my flat in February me and Luke have been living back at home in order to save even more money. We had a mortgage advisor meeting in the summer to know our direction. And by the time this post has gone up, we’ll have started viewings.
We have a pretty good idea on the location where we’d like to move and what we want. So now the next month or two is about choosing the right place for us to settle. As we know this is a huge life-altering purchase we aren’t going to rush into it but we are in a fantastic position of being chain free. And this should work in our favour. I’ll be blogging about the journey, and the expenses surrounding buying a property so you’ll be able to see how it goes.
The next goal for 2020 comes after we’ve bought a house. We’re in the fortunate position of being able to stay at my parent’s house for however long we need. So the plan is once we have bought we’re going to spend some time renovating and decorating so that when we move in the bulk of things are done. In our budget plans at the moment, this includes installing solar power, getting a new kitchen, getting new doors and flooring throughout and generally plastering and decorating.
Depending on the actual house and it’s condition this may require more work but we’ll only know that once we have chosen a property. So 2020 will see us doing the work and finally being able to move in. Although I say us doing the work, it’s going to be Luke, his dad and contractor friends they know.
Moving and renovating is going to be incredibly expensive. And however prepared I am with savings for the deposit, moving expenses and renovations I know things will crop up that I haven’t planned for. This is why I want to make sure I am smart with all of our money choices. From looking for deals on our appliances, buying things through cashback sites and making the most of the points I get on my American Express card.
It’s going to be a tough year financially and I know that I’m going to have to say no to things as I can’t afford it. And I’m fully prepared for that, especially over the middle six months of the year. Although I know the option of a short term loan is about. But anything I can save and be savvy on then I’m there for it.
Even though we’re going to be moving and going through a lot of change I want to continue growing both my blog here and my freelance business. I started doing some more freelance work in 2019 and have loved it. This has included some articles for other sites, and some blogger outreach and I’m keen to do more of this.
While I won’t be doing as much of the renovating as Luke I want to make sure I’m contributing in some way. And continuing to grow my business means I’ll be earning money so we can pump it back into the house. I’m so proud of what I’ve managed to carve in the blogging world over the past few years. And while I know I’m still a small fish in the world of blogging and there’s so much more I could be doing I’m very proud of myself.

What great goals to have buying your own property and then renovating to your dream home is a great achievement
We bought our first house this year and it was such an involved process. I am so glad that we have our own home now. I hope that it all goes smoothly for you!
Thanks, me too! It’s such a big thing to be jumping into so I know it’s going to be a long process x
You have great life goals and I am happy that you have decided to make that dream of purchasing your own home a reality on your 30th year of life. Wishing you all the best!
Houses are expensive. I got my foot on the property ladder when I got married the first ime in my 20’s. If you can buy property it is a good investment.
Totally agree. We wouldn’t have been in the position to buy what we want if I hadn’t owned a flat before and made money it x
Such a great achievement buying a house in this day and age. Well done you!! The best investment
Getting into property is a tough one. We bought in my very early twenty’s, but I am sure you will find a place and settle soon xx
I bought a flat in my very early twenties too and was very lucky that it made profit so we can now afford to move to a bigger place x
You have some big goals for next year! I will be following your house buying process as I plan to buy a house in the next 2 years or so as well.
Great goals to have, I hope you achieve what you want. Getting on the property ladder is a goal of mine, hope to do so soon.
You should be so proud, your blog is fabulous and you’re able to be on the property market while being self employed, which is a huge achievement. Good luck on house viewings!
Although I am self-employed with my blog I am not using that for the mortgage and just using my wages from my full-time job. As you never know what the world of blogging is going to be like x
Amazing post, it all sounds so exciting!! I’d love to move house but after watching the stress my best-friend had selling her flat and moving into her new place (she was stuck in a horrible chain) I’ve decided to stay put for a bit longer haha! It’s probably going to be on the cards for 2021! Good luck for all the big changes!
Katie xoxo
That’s why we did it separately as I think buying and selling in one is too much. I sold my flat in Feb and moved back home so we could make ourselves chain free x
Fantastic goals and this is great way to keep yourself accountable. Congratulations on the new house and I love the books you have shown – saving for my TBR pile!
Exciting times ahead, 2020 sounds like it will be an incredible year for you! Good luck with the house – it can be incredibly stressful but certainly worth it in the end!
Such a brilliant idea for a post. As you know, I turn 30 a week or two after you and I have so many plans for my 30th year! Hoe you manage to achieve your goals. x
great post and goals! I know I need to work harder at saving in 2020 too! Good luck with blogging goals too!
