*I was given complimentary tickets to one of the sightseeing tours in London
in exchange for a blog post. But all thoughts and opinions are my own
Despite the fact that I live a 20-minute train ride from London there are still a lot of things I haven’t done. My London bucket list remains lengthy, and every time I tick something off I add 4 more things on. I am a huge fan of being a tourist in my own city though as there’s so much to see and do throughout. Another thing I am a huge fan of is sightseeing or guided tours. You learn so much more from then than you would if you just walked around on your own. And usually, you get some perks for joining them like quick access, or access to areas you wouldn’t usually.
Citywonders offered to send me on a sightseeing tour and I chose something I’d yet to do; Westminster Abbey and the Changing of the Guards. Alongside talking about that tour, here are some of my favourite sightseeing tours in London they Citywonders have to offer.
I’ve got to start by talking about the recent sightseeing tours in London that I did which were Westminster Abbey and seeing the changing of the guards. Our day started pretty early at 9 am outside Westminster Abbey, but despite being December it was a beautiful day. For the next 1.5-2 hours, we spent inside the Abbey being shown around by our wonderful guide. We were provided headsets so we could hear her commentary even if we weren’t right next to her which was great. And she provided insight and history on everything we saw. Her knowledge was just incredible.
It was amazing seeing inside the building and hearing about all the past royals buried here. How and where the coronation of kings and queens’ happens. And the people who have passed and have been commemorated here. After the tour around the abbey, we walked over to see the changing of the horse guards. I can’t believe this is something I’d never seen despite living so close to London for my whole life. Our guide knew exactly where to stand for the best views and photos and it was a great end to our tour.
The next of the sightseeing tours in London which I think is a great option is the Tower of London. There’s a lot to see in the Tower of London and a lot of history behind it. So the best way to experience it and find out more about the impressive site is to have a guide. And who better to show you around and give you first-hand accounts of being a guard than a Beefeater?
This tour comes with a private audience with one of the Beefeaters who can shed light on what the tower was used for when it was first built, some of the things that happened here and it’s importance today.
The staterooms at Buckingham Palace open from late July until early October when the queen isn’t in residence at the palace. And during this time it’s open to the public to explore. Citywonders do an Interior tour of Buckingham Palace which will give you a glimpse into the lives of the Royal Family both inside and within the Mall, one of London’s beautiful royal parks.
I went to Buckingham Palace a few years ago and while the pre-recorded tour was great it would have been much nicer to hear it from a guide there with you. Meeting not far from the palace you’ll get some background on other buildings you pass such as St. James’ Palace which was built by Henry VIII and once home to the royal zoo. Alongside sites like Clarence House home to Prince Charles.
If you’re in London during the month’s it opens this would be a great tour to experience.

I am the same as you, live 20 minutes train ride away and so much I haven’t seen. We are trying to go to different areas now to experience and find new areas of London x
Yeah I think I want to explore more, but also at the same time not spend too much money which can be tough in London x
I live pretty near London too and still have loads on my list of places I would like to explore. I went inside Buckingham Palace when I was a child but would love to do it again!
I really enjoyed it when I went and the audio guide was great x
I know so many people that live so close to London, and yet rarely do any of the actual common place sightseeing. Going on these tours sounds like the ideal way to do it, getting all the right information and learning so much more than you would by just browsing about yourself.
You’re so right, we go abroad and do all the touristy things but don’t do it in our own cities x
There are so many fabulous sights in London. I think you get some great insights on an organised tour too
I definitely need to take advantage of some sightseeing tours. I’ve been to London plenty of times but there is still so much more that I need to see!
there are some fab ideas here for sure. Changing of the guards is a fab site and a must see x
A private audience with Beefeaters at The Tower of London is brilliant, ive done it a few times now x
IVe been to London countless times with and without the kids, ive never done this, and my family are big fans of the royal family, great review
City Wonders sounds like a great suggestion for my friend who is heading to London in March from the states. Great way to see London.
London just always looks like such an amazing place to be, with so much interesting things to see. Thank you for sharing this guide.
I have always wanted to see Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. It’s mine and my other half’s 10 year anniversary in March and I’m thinking of booking a weekend away in London so a tour like this could absolutely make our agenda!
