Happy 2021 everyone! Again it wasn’t quite the start to a new year had planned, or how anyone would have envisioned January 2021 would look. But we’ve gotten through the toughest (and seemingly longest) month of the year. We brought in the year totally relaxed after a really nice New Years Eve. We went very simple and ordered a takeaway, watched a movie and just chilled. And to be honest even if we weren’t in a pandemic it’s what I would have wanted to be doing.
So at the very start of the year we were plunged back into a national lockdown again. And much like the first one we don’t quite know when it will end but it is what it is. I’m going to admit that I am struggling more during this lockdown than previous ones. I don’t know if it’s the cold weather and not being able to go outside as much. Or it might just be that the end just doesn’t feel like it’s in sight and it feels like we’ve just lost a year of our lives. I’m trying to keep my mind occupied as much as possible when I’m not working with books, movies, TV shows and crafts. But with the thought of being in lockdown until March (or maybe longer) it’s getting tougher.
Luke had a track and trace notification at the end of the month that someone been on a building site with had tested positive. So we both had to isolate for about 8 days. For me it wasn’t too much of an issue, but for Luke it meant he couldn’t work. But thank god for our emergency savings.
I only managed one door stop hello with my family this month. About 10 days into January 2021 I stopped by to see my parents, my nan and auntie and my brother. It was nice to see their faces and I even managed a little walk with my mum which was nice. Seeing people in the flesh, even if you’re not close, beats phonecalls and Facetime. It was also a few days before my birthday so I picked up my presents so I had them for the day which was nice.
I was very lucky last year with my birthday that I didn’t miss out, but January 2021 meant that like most people I had to survive a lockdown birthday. All things considered I had a lovely birthday thanks to the love of Luke, my family and my friends. I got lots of little deliveries of cards and things in the post which was nice, including some beautiful flowers. I was throughly spoilt by Luke and my parents as well.
My birthday was a Thursday and on the Saturday Luke did a birthday treat for me in our garage. He cornered of a whole area and turning it into a spa/ holiday space. There was sand over the ground, a backdrop of a beach and inflatable palm trees. And then he got a massage table and all of the stuff to give me a massage which I’ve been craving since spas and salons have been shut. To finish it off he got a hot tub. And I have to admit we’ve been in the hot tub every weekend since and it’s been a great way to relax.
I’ve really found my feet with my fitness journey with Peloton. I’ve been building up my rides and how long I can go on the bike and I can do a half hour class now which I’m so happy about as there are so many I want to do. But before I couldn’t manage more than 20 minutes. But I’ve also been pushing in strength stuff as well doing weights, full bodyweight stuff and pilates. I’m really enjoying exercising and try to do 30-60 minutes a day across the morning and evening.
We’ve made a tiny bit of progress on house things with the wall tiles being finished in our downstairs loo now. As soon as the floor tiles and grouting has been finished we can finally get the toilet and sink in and use it. And I can not wait!
We were also lucky enough to get some snow this month with a day where it came down so thick and so fast. And it settled and stayed for about 3 days which was so nice and magical.

January has been a really tough month, I can’t say I am not pleased to see the arrival of February but how different it will be, who knows!
Your birthday sounds wonderful, your little ‘escape’ sounds like the perfect way to celebrate x
Yeah I don’t know how different Feb will be, but just getting a little more sunlight will be good x
I have been watching a few new TV show during January. But I have also been eating more and have put on a bit of weight. Can’t wait for the weather to pick up a bit, so I can get outside more.
Yeah I definitely need to get outside for more walks when the weather is nicer x
My whole family have now done a lockdown birthday, my husband celebrated his 50th in January and totally different to what we had planned. Somehow we all managed to survive the longest January in history. Happy belated birthday x
I hope your husband had a nice birthday (as much as he could!) My mum and fiance just about had their birthdays in mid-March last year but I think they’re going to miss them this year and that means everyone’s birthdays would have been in lockdown as no one in our family has birthdays during the summer months when it was a bit more relaxed last year x
It was a long one wasn’t it? Glad you had a good birthday, it was an experience having a lockdown birthday wasn’t it?
Yes a very bizarre experience but we made the most of it x
I am sorry that you had to both isolate and that Luke could not work – at least you have savings. Love the little island escape – very cool and a cute idea. Sending Birthday wishes x
At the end of the day we just pretty lucky that Luke didn’t catch anything, and are very lucky that we had savings to cover it x
Even though I love spending birthdays on my own and enjoyed last year, I don’t want another lockdown birthday.
Lockdown parties are so different and I guess we have to make the best out of it and looks like Luke just did that for you. So glad you had a wonderful weekend and I do hope you get to see your family again soon.
Love the sound of a hot tub in the garage! If we had one my kids would be in it all the time – enjoy!
It’s so nice as I can just shut my eyes and forget that I’m at home x
Oh my word, he set you up a faux spa holiday! I am super jealous, but not in a negative way. 😉 I’d be looking like a prune if I had that at home.
It feels a bit Groundhog Day here, so samey every day. Someone wake me up when it’s summer?
I’m very lucky that he did such an amazing job on my birthday. I know what you mean about groundhog day, it does all feel very samey x
Its nice go be able to get these small pleasures during these tough times. Happy belated birthday, glad that you at least you enjoyed the hot tub.
