Seven Reasons Why I Love Working From Home

Office desk at home

If you’d told me four years ago that I’d pretty much solidly be working from home I wouldn’t have believed you. It would feel like an uphill battle to even get to work from home for a day, so the complete 180 was strange at first.

There are pro’s to both working from home and working from the office, but I couldn’t ever go back to fully or even partially being office based again. When I moved jobs earlier this year one of the biggest things culture wise for me was finding a job that didn’t require me to be office based very often.

Here are some of the reasons I love working from home.

I have a much better morning routine

When I’m working from home I find that I get more sleep over a week as I give myself a lie in (or two) during the week, getting up maybe half an hour before I start work. And the mornings I do get up I have time to work out or read or do some bits around the house. If I was in an office I’d spend about an hour getting ready and another hour (or maybe more) commuting. There would be no time for anything else.

When I’m working from home getting ready doesn’t take me as long as I rarely wear makeup and sometimes I don’t wash my hair as regularly so I end up with more time.

I rarely feel tired any more as if I had a late night I can just choose to lie in.

Working from home saves me money

Fuel, parking and train fares means commuting gets a little pricey. And that’s without the breakfast treat and the lunch at Pret. When I’m only in once or twice a month it doesn’t feel too bad. But if I was in multiple times every week I would have to drastically change my budget to allow for the additional spend.

Working from home also means there’s less chance for spontaneous spending as I don’t walk past any shops on my way to the station.

I get more done in my lunchbreaks

I always try to take my full hour lunchbreak when I’m at home, naturally it doesn’t happen every day, but that was the same in office life. Having an hour at home gives me so much more freedom than an hour in the office.

Some days I just sit and read for an hour which is dreamy. Other days I use it to work out if I was too lazy to jump on the bike before work. There’s even the option to run errands like popping out to drop off some Vinted parcels. Working from home makes me feel more productive during my  break times.

Working from home means more stuff gets done around the house

Being able to stick on the washing between meetings or do a quick hoover at lunch time makes a big difference. I used to have long lists of things to do at home but I’d generally be too tired after work to do much. Then it would end up piling up at the weekend and I’d feel like house work was never ending.

I feel like I can get deeper into projects when I’m at home

There are still distractions working from home, and it isn’t to say I couldn’t get super involved in a project when in an office environment but I find it easier at home. Being able to 100% control my environment from temperature to noise means I can create the optimal space.

Being around people in the office means there’s more chance of people popping over to ask a question, or starting a conversation when you grabbed a drink. But that’s not an issue when I’m at home.

Working from home means I can be with my cats more

Nothing productive comes out of this one, but I get to see my fur babies when I work from home. They don’t surround me all day as I do shut the door to my office, but being able to walk out and get a drink and see them makes a big difference.

Near enough every time I go and sit in the living room to read during lunch Loki will jump onto my lap for snuggles. And that just makes my day.

I don’t have to find meeting rooms or search for headphones for meetings

In most office environments meeting rooms come at a premium. At previous jobs you had no hope in finding a room unless you booked a month in advance and could squish everyone into a six person room. At my current job as stakeholders are spread around the country even if I was in the office I’d still be taking video meetings. So I always have to remember to dig out my headphones so I don’t disturb everyone.

Working from home means I don’t have to worry about finding space to take meetings. And as I am at home on my own (bar the cats) I don’t need to worry about a headset or earphones.

Is working from home an option for you? And if so do you find a better work life balance?

I worked for a company before I started working for myself. I would never go back to that! I love being able to set my own hours and be my own boss.

Working from home is one of my best decisions too. I make my own time schedule and basically do what I want. I do believe you have to have a personality where you don’t keep putting things off or set timers and reminders.

I think remote work is so much more beneficial and affordable if you have to commute especially. At the same time there are pros to in-office but overall I think having the freedom to work from home is such a bonus. I’m eternally grateful I get to.
