*AD- This is a collaborative post but all words on the building better opportunities programme are my own
According to the latest stats from the ONS the unemployment rate of those over the age of 16 is 4.8%. Although this figure is a bit better than a few months back it is higher than it was pre-pandemic. It’s a tough time to be job hunting or looking for the next step. But you don’t have to do it on your own!
If you live in Hertfordshire you can access the Building Better Opportunities programme to help you gain employment and skills mentoring support. This programme is one of many supported and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund alongside the ESF (European Social Fund).
I’ve been very lucky to have not been made redundant or struggling to find a job. But I’ve seen it first hand with family and friends. Both of my parents have been made redundant from jobs in their life, and looking for work can be a difficult and stressful process. But the programme will help you throughout to find work and achieve your full potential.
Your local hub can help you on the first steps to finding your next role by providing:
Once you apply and have been accepted to the programme you’ll get:
All of the services and programmes are free to you and are there as a source of support.
There is also a Youth Futures Programme to help support young people between the ages of 15 and 19 (or up to 21 if you’re a care leaver, or up to 25 if you’re a young adult with disabilities). The programme is for those not currently in education, training or employment who may need support on their next steps.
Anyone on this programme will get help to work out what your training or job goals are to work out the next steps. This may include activities such as creative groups, youth projects and sports clubs.
You can apply for the Building Better Opportunities programme here. You can also register on behalf of someone else who you think would benefit from the programme, but make sure you have their permission to share their details.
You can call and speak to a member of the programme team on 01992 588576. And by heading to their website you can search for your nearest local hub.

I find this to be a great idea! People need help and encouragement along the way sometimes.
This sounds like a great resource! I had yet to hear about it until now but it sounds great.
It is always a good idea to go back or take refresher courses if possible. So many great opportunities.
What a wonderful resource for those looking for better opportunities. There’s a lot of great courses here.
This sounds like such an amazing resource! All of the different courses sound great! Need to check this out!
This is such a big help for those affected by the pandemic. Great idea!
This is so useful for people who are looking to get back at it, after time away from work or education. I know a lot of people who have children and take time off really struggle!
This is such a great initiative, hopefully it will be rolled out in other places too
Hopefully more councils will invest money in helping people get back into work or education x
Pre-rona it was bad enough but it’s sad to see that it is still bad but glad there opportunities like these to help the over 16s.
It’s a tricky time to be looking for a job. I know some places have quite a lot of spaces, but not everyone wants to work in hospitality say. Good to see a way of helping people find the right post.
These sound like great opportunities, being the parent of a child with an illness finding courses suited for them is very hard. C is about to enrol on one that sounds amazing
I really hope everything goes well for her x
This sounds like a wonderful resource! So far, all my friends in Herts who were made redundant have found other roles but will definitely be saving this to show any of them that may need the help!
