Giving Thanks To Mums And Motherly Figures This Mother’s Day

Red letter days voucher

I always find that Mother’s Day creeps up on me, especially as it’s always so close to my mum’s birthday. I have six days between this year, which is pretty good going considering sometimes it’s been the same weekend.

It’s a great feeling being able to spoil someone special in your life. I always like to get something for my nan and auntie as well.

Here are some options to give thanks to mums and motherly figures this Mother’s Day.

The experience gift

Experience gifts are such a special Mother’s Day gift, or for any time, as they give the recipient something to look forward to. Events, birthdays etc., are special days, and an experience gift means the fun can last that little bit longer.

From Red Letter Days, I wanted to talk about the tempting gifs for her set* (£99), which is a great way of letting the recipient pick what suits them best. And you never know, you may get invited along too!

The set has a range of experiences, some for one person and some for a pair. They can choose from dining and food experiences, an adventure thrill, a pampering treatment or even a getaway. Plus, as there are experiences all over the country, they could choose to keep it for when they’ve got a trip planned.

The ones that stood out to me were a VR experience in Wembley, all themed around Alice in Wonderland, which is very me. There are also quite a few bottomless brunches and afternoon teas that I know my mum would love, or even tickets to a show like Mamma Mia.

Treat your mum to some new clothes

I love buying my mum clothes as I usually pick things for her that she wouldn’t usually go for herself.

My mum wears a lot of black, and getting her into some colour can be tricky. I picked up this beautiful black and gold foil printed skirt* (£34.99) as it’s black, but there’s a bit of colour to stand out. My mum has returned to wearing gold, so this will match perfectly with her jewellery and accessories. The skirt has an elasticated waistband, so it’s a super comfortable fit.

During the colder weather, you can’t beat a super soft oversized dress with leggings. I grabbed the black stripe open collar soft touch dress* (£45.99), a comfortable dress. It’s great for around the house, but also for going out. I wear mine with a waist belt to give it more shape. My mum doesn’t wear many dresses, so I have to get comfortable options to start her off.

The V neckline is flattering, and it comes in a maxi length as well for even more comfort.

Shoes are the thing I struggle with buying the most. There are loads of boots, trainers, or sandals, but little in between. So when buying work wear or evening wear, it can be a little difficult. I picked up the chunky black loafers* (£29.99), which are widths and sizes to fit most people.

They have a black tone chain detail to add a focus and a padded insole, so they’re comfortable.

Orange and mango body wash

Creating a Mother’s Day hamper

I love picking goodies and making hampers for special occasions. And if you do this, you’ll need some pampering goodies.

This blood orange and mango body scrub* (£19.50) is a favourite as it is nourishing and natural. It’s full of Himalayan and Dead Sea salt to polish the skin; there’s also hydrating avocado oil and vitamin-rich mango butter.

It feels luxurious, not heavy or greasy on the skin, and smells incredible. It all comes housed in a glass jar so it will look great in a hamper.

Pure lakes set

Sticking to the pampering items, the Pure Bath gift set* (£50) would be a great addition if you want something luxurious.

The set has everything you need for a relaxing bath or shower, including:

The set comes in Pure Lakes’ signature set, Grapefruit & Lemongrass, which smells beautiful.

Avon lipsticks

Add some makeup to the Mother’s Day hamper

Makeup can be hard to buy for someone else, but lipsticks tend to be easier to get right.

Avon has recently released their hydramatic matte lipsticks* (£10), which come in 15 beautiful shades. The lipsticks are unique as they’re bold and matte in colour on the outside but hydrating in the core. This gives the lipsticks 50% hydrating and skin-protecting ingredients.

What I’ve loved about using these are the stunning colours, and my lips never feel dry like they can with some other lipsticks.

Lindt chocolate

Yummy treats

You can’t have a hamper without some sweet treats, can you? And what feels more luxurious than some lindt?!

There are so many different flavours of the Lindt LINDOR balls that would make a great gift, including the new blood orange flavour. I am a massive fan of orange chocolate, so these hit the spot and I don’t know how I kept hold of them long enough to photograph. They’re smooth, and creamy and taste like the best chocolate orange treat.

The ones that didn’t last long enough were the double chocolate truffles. But I didn’t get a look in with these.

The binding room book

Complete your Mother’s Day hamper with a good book

I may be biased, but there’s no occasion where a book isn’t the perfect gift. Most of the time it’s just a gift for me which is totally acceptable.

In January, the paperback edition of The Binding Room* (£4.50) by Nadine Matheson came out, so if you’re buying for someone who likes crime thrillers, this could be just what they need. The book is the second in the DI Henley series, but you don’t have to have read the first to read this one.

DI Henley is part of The Serial Crimes Unit, which is called to investigate a stabbing. When she assesses the crime scene, she discovers a hidden door that conceals a room set up for torture. Bound to the bed in the middle of the room is the body of a man.

When another body is found, also tied down, Henley realises someone is torturing innocent people and leaving them for dead. But there’s no connection between the pair, so Henley and her team must figure out why they’ve been targeted.

It’s currently got a 4.24 rating on Goodreads, which is really good in my book.

Sponge cake box

If you’re not up for making a hamper, get a pre-made one

While I love making hampers, it might not be for you, and you may prefer to get a pre-made one.

Sponge has a great selection of cake-based sets, including this Mother’s Day hamper* (£24.95). Each hamper comes with a personalised card, a candle, a mud mask and chocolate hearts. But the star of the attraction is the set of four baby sponge cakes. You can pick from the traditional set (like we had) with chocolate, lemon, coffee and lemon drizzle, or you can go quirky, which includes red velvet, carrot, sticky toffee and chocolate orange. And there are both vegan and gluten-free options too.

The cakes were fresh, as they were individually wrapped, and they were so tasty. You can then choose whether the set has a cocktail (Pink Gin Fizz or Victoria Sponge Martini) or loose-leaf tea & an infuser.

Ceramic bird house

Mother’s Day gifts for the home lover

My parents spend a lot of time in their garden, so gifts related to this are always winners.

I’m sure this bird feeding house* (£9.99) from CJ Wildlife will be a hit with them. The ceramic bird feeder is beautiful and comes in four different colours, including the minty green that I have.

You can put some seed mix in the bottom of the house to provide neighbourhood birds with some food and a place to be cosy, especially while it’s still quite cold.

The feeder has a sturdy hanging cord so that it can be hung on a pole or from a tree. And the whole thing is so beautifully made that any garden or nature lover should love this.

Womens career books

For the career woman in your life

Our working lives can be tough, and if you’re buying for anyone who needs a bit of inspiration or wants to make a career change, these books could be a massive help.

365 quotes to accelerate your career and find balance in life* (£10.99) is a short snappy book with loads of wisdom from author Dr James Espey OBE. It’s quick to read and features easy-to-digest quotes and nuggets that we can all take to help us in life.

The other book I have is smart career moves for smart women if you’re buying for someone who is going through a change. The book has just come out and offers insights and guidance on making the right decisions about career paths and how to prepare for it. Most people head into a career path quite early in life it’s only natural to want a change at some point in your career.

Silk pillowcase

Ladies deserve silk for Mother’s Day

Sleeping on a silk pillow has many beauty benefits, from reducing lines and wrinkles to waking up with hydrated, glowing skin. Unlike cotton or linen, which can tug on your skin, silk glides. Silk is also great for your hair as well which helps reduce frizz and more hydration, so your hair looks lustrous. I’ve exclusively been using silk hair bands for years, and my hair has loved it.

Not only that but silk is hypo-allergenic and temperature-regulating.

If my mum knew all of this, she’d never sleep on anything other than silk. This silk pillowcase* (From £32.40) from Cocoonzzz comes in various colours (and even some patterns), including the platinum grey that I have. The pillowcases come in beautiful packaging and make giving something that might seem practical as pretty luxurious.

The pillowcases from Cocoonzzz are made from 100% pure mulberry silk 16 momme, without any other chemical substances. And it’s made from Grade A silk so you’re getting the best quality you can.

Grapefruit diffuser

Something to make the house smell amazing

We have diffusers all around our home and use them far more than candles. And I know my parents are the same, especially as they dog sit quite often.

But the worst thing is having an amazing diffuser that doesn’t last. But this 400ml diffuser* (£28) from The Copenhagen Company will likely last around 20 weeks, which is a good amount of time. You can get smaller diffusers, but why would you want to do that?!

I’m a huge fruity fan, so I have the Grapefruit scent, which is so fresh, and just what you want to smell as you walk past. The bottles are super simple and will fit into any home decor.

The Copenhagen Company is a family-run business supplying luxury home fragrances since 1999. They’re all inspired by founder Bo’s Danish roots and passion for fine fragrance. And the great thing is the products are all vegan, cruelty-free, ethical and sustainable.

What would you love to be gifted from this selection?
